One hundred years have come and goneA
Since thy brave spirit came to earthB
Since Scotland saw thy genius dawnA
And had the joy to give thee birthB
-
There was no proud and brilliant throngC
To celebrate thine advent hereD
And but the humble heard the songC
Which first proclaim'd a poet nearE
-
But genius will assert its rightF
To speak a word or chant a layG
And thou with independent mightF
Asserted it from day to dayG
-
No fawning sycophantic whineH
Marr'd the clear note thy spirit blewI
Thy stirring words thy gift divineH
Were to thyself and country trueI
-
Tho' heir to naught of wealth or landJ
Thy soaring mind with fancy fir'dK
Saw in Creation's lavish handJ
The gifts display'd thy soul desir'dK
-
The field the forest and the hillL
Supplied thee with exhaustless wealthM
The singing birds and flowing rillL
Unto thy soul gave food and healthM
-
An honest man thou lov'd and thouN
Wert honest to thy bosom's coreO
As harden'd hand and sweated browN
A true tho' silent witness boreO
-
No empty theorizer thouN
Thy words said what thyself would doI
Thou ne'er would make thy spirit bowN
That worldly honors might accrueI
-
Torn by temptations strange and wildP
Hard hearted critics laugh to scornQ
The fate of the poetic childP
In rugged bonnie Scotland bornQ
-
But let them laugh they laugh in vainR
For they or we who know in partS
Can never gauge the mighty strainR
That burst the genial poet's heartS
-
It is enough for us to knowT
The songs he sang for Scotland's sakeU
Which winds of time can never blowT
Into oblivion's silent lakeU
-
O Burns thy life was sad we knowT
Thy sensitive and fertile mindV
Had to withstand full many a blowT
Dealt by the ignorant and blindV
-
But let us do thee justice hereD
Tho' distant from thy native shoreO
For all thy faults repress the sneerE
And thy great qualities exploreO
-
In Canada where all are freeW
And none can e'er be call'd a slaveX
Let Scotia's sons remember theeW
And weave a garland for thy graveX
-
In fancy let them grace thy browsY
With wreathes of fadeless asphodelT
And let them yearly plight their vowsY
Unto the bard they love so wellT
