Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JKLK MNEN OPEP QRPR SPTP UBTB VWPW PXPX PPYP OBZA2 B2C2PC2One day I sat me down to write | A |
And thought with might and main | B |
But neither subject fit nor thoughts | C |
Came to my barren brain | B |
- | |
And then I laid my pen aside | D |
With sad despairing mind | E |
And fill'd with self contemptuous scorn | F |
I thought of human kind | E |
- | |
I saw a trifling feeble race | G |
With narrow thoughts and aims | H |
Each noble aspiration crush'd | I |
By rigid duty's claims | H |
- | |
Selfish and hard they toil'd along | J |
And in the bitter strife | K |
Neglected all that sweeten'd toil | L |
Or that ennobl'd life | K |
- | |
Another day I sat me down | M |
A happy subject came | N |
And pleasant thoughts light up my mind | E |
With bright and cheerful flame | N |
- | |
And as I thought with heart aglow | O |
Self satisfied I grew | P |
And guag'd with ampler girt my mind | E |
And minds of others too | P |
- | |
With satisfaction now I view'd | Q |
Creation's mighty plan | R |
And had a clearer vision too | P |
And juster thoughts of man | R |
- | |
A toiling mortal yet I saw | S |
But saw no more a clod | P |
For far as mind o'er matter is | T |
He stood plac'd by his God | P |
- | |
For now I saw to man was given | U |
The right to rule and reign | B |
And bend all other pow'rs to his | T |
In nature's wild domain | B |
- | |
The light of endless life gleam'd forth | V |
From his pain'd body's eye | W |
And tho' in shackles now it liv'd | P |
That light should never die | W |
- | |
The window now thro' which it look'd | P |
Might clos'd in darkness be | X |
But in a world above beyond | P |
Eternal light 'twould see | X |
- | |
And this is what I learn'd that day | P |
When I sat down to write | P |
That man above all earthly things | Y |
Sits plac'd by lawful right | P |
- | |
And tho' he lives this life below | O |
'Mid accidents and pain | B |
There is a better life for him | Z |
When he shall live again | A2 |
- | |
And tho' his road upon this earth | B2 |
Be dusty bleak and bare | C2 |
Another and a joyful road | P |
Is his to travel there | C2 |
