Misguided man thy turbid lifeA
This day in shameful death shall closeB
And thou shalt ne'er behold the sunC
That in thy sight this morn aroseD
-
The moon which yestere'en so clearE
Shone thro' thy cell's small window paneF
No more shalt thou behold its lightG
Or see its chasten'd rays againH
-
No more thy voice 'mong savage hordesI
Shall sound with baneful potent spellJ
To make them rise with savage forceK
And 'gainst their country's laws rebelL
-
And thou art calm in trustful hopeM
And conscience gives thee little painF
'Tis strange but man's a myst'ry deepN
Unsolv'd in finite thought's domainF
-
The scaffold's there and thou art firmO
Thou walkest forth upon it nowP
The thoughts within thy breast are hidQ
But calm and peaceful is thy browP
-
The man of God thy faithful friendR
Of brighter days and happier yearsS
Upon thy cheek with holy lipsT
A kiss imprints 'mid blinding tearsU
-
The priest and thou art praying nowP
For thy poor soul before 'tis goneV
When suddenly with crashing forceK
The door descends the bolt is drawnV
-
And what can be the pray'r of thoseD
Who learn'd with awe thy dreadful deathW
It is that thou God's mercy foundX
Before thou yielded up thy breathW
-
It is that thou that mercy foundX
Which thou to others never gaveY
That thy rebellious restless soulZ
A pardon found beyond the graveY
-
Man's justice had to take its courseK
And tie the fatal hempen knotA2
For vengeance cried from out the groundX
Where lay the blood of murder'd ScottA2
-
But who shall say e'en such a cryB2
Did drown the voice of pard'ning loveC2
Which comes to sins of deepest dyeB2
From Him who died but reigns aboveC2
