When men of gentle lives departA
They leave behind no brilliant storyB
Of fam'd exploits to make men startA
In wonder at their dazzling gloryB
-
The scholar's light religion's beamsC
Tho' fill'd with great commanding pow'rD
In modest greatness throw their gleamsC
In quiet rays from hour to hourE
-
The greatest battles oft are foughtF
Unseen by any earthly eyeG
The victors all alone have wroughtF
And unapplauded live or dieG
-
'Twas thus with thee thou rev'rend manH
In peaceful holy work thy lifeI
Was spent until th' allotted spanH
Was cut by Time's relentless knifeI
-
Far from the keen and heartless trainJ
Who daily feel Ambition's stingK
Thy life remov'd felt not the painJ
Which goads each one beneath her wingK
-
What pains thou felt what joys thou knewL
Who shall presume to think or tellM
But this we know there daily grewL
Within thy heart a living wellM
-
That well of love increas'd each dayN
The milk of human kindness flow'dO
And cheer'd the faint ones on their wayN
Along a hard and toilsome roadO
-
Thy voice rang out for years and yearsP
In fancy yet we hear its rollQ
And see thy face thro' blinding tearsR
Fill'd with a love for ev'ry soulQ
-
Thy words we shall not soon forgetS
Thy deeds shall be remember'd tooL
And now while ev'ry eye is wetS
Let us accord thee honor dueL
-
Thou battl'd not 'gainst hosts of hellM
With words alone convincing warmT
Thy deeds were like the fatal shellM
That bursts amid the battle's stormT
-
The temple now which stately standsU
A lasting monument shall tellM
Of lib'ral hearts and willing handsU
Urg'd on by thee to labor wellM
-
O father friend well see no moreV
Thy fight is done and it was longW
But thou hast reach'd another shoreV
And singeth now a blessed songW
-
The snows shall come upon the hillsX
The valleys too with white be spreadY
The birds shall whistle by the rillsX
The flowers shall their fragrance shedY
-
The spring shall come to deck the earthZ
In garb of vernal lovelinessX
And sorrow shall abound and mirthZ
Betimes shall cheer our deep distressX
-
The seasons shall perform their roundsX
And vegetation bloom and fadeA2
But thou wilt heed nor sights nor soundsX
For thou to rest for aye art laidA2
