What is life I asked a ladA
As on with joyful boundB
He went to join the merry troopC
Upon the cricket groundB
-
He paus'd at once with pleasant lookD
This bright ey'd laughing boyE
Why life said he is sport and mirthF
With me 'tis mostly joyE
-
The tasks which I receive at schoolG
I feel to be unkindH
But when I get my ball and batI
I drive them from my mindH
-
With other boys I run and shoutJ
I throw and catch the ballK
Oh life is a right jolly thingL
To take it all in allK
-
And what is life I asked a maidM
Who trod as if on airN
So lightly she did trip alongO
So bright she look'd and fairN
-
The maiden stopp'd her graceful stepsP
And to my words repliedQ
Oh life's a lovely dream she saidR
With some slight boons deniedQ
-
But love and health and beauty crownsS
My lot so filled with cheerT
That joy beams forth from ev'rythingO
To favor'd mortals hereU
-
The birds and flow'rs are fill'd with joyE
With joy the birds do singO
The very rain that comes from heav'nV
Seems loads of joy to bringO
-
And when I look to future yearsW
The view seems brighter stillX
And brighter grow the perfum'd flow'rsW
As I go up the hillX
-
And what is life I asked a manV
A man of middle yearsW
This world is truly call'd he saidR
A vale of bitter tearsW
-
I thought this earth a bright fair spotY
But that was long agoO
I view it now with truer sightZ
And see a world of woeO
-
With disappointment and regretA2
And hopes thrown to the groundB
I live but with an aching heartB2
I tread life's weary roundB
-
And what is life This time a manV
With hoary hair repliedQ
This life consists of gracious boonsW
With evils by their sideQ
-
To leave the bad and choose the goodC2
Is done but by the fewD2
And that is why mankind are suchE2
A discontented crewD2
-
With greed the pleasure now is grasp'dF2
Or what they deem is soO
Not thinking that each pleasure nowV
May bring a future woeO
-
My son take heed to what I sayW
And see thou mark it wellG2
All earthly joys too much indulg'dH2
Will lead you down to hellG2
-
For Heaven's sake I pray you nowV
To curb your youthful willX
Nor give your headstrong passions playW
To use their deadly skillX
-
There's joy my son all through this lifeI2
To meet as well as woeO
And if mankind would act arightH2
Much more of it they'd knowO
-
With prudence virtue for your friendsW
And caution by your sideH2
And faith in God's o'erruling pow'rJ2
Your life will calmly glideH2
-
Content to bear the ills you meetH2
Mix'd always with your joyE
For human prudence can't avertH2
Some woes which still annoyE
-
Pray that your mind be strong and clearT
And vigorous your frameK2
Your heart inspir'd with love and fearT
For your Creator's nameK2
