| As on with joyful bound | B |
| He went to join the merry troop | C |
| Upon the cricket ground | B |
| - | |
| He paus'd at once with pleasant look | D |
| This bright ey'd laughing boy | E |
| Why life said he is sport and mirth | F |
| With me 'tis mostly joy | E |
| - | |
| The tasks which I receive at school | G |
| I feel to be unkind | H |
| But when I get my ball and bat | I |
| I drive them from my mind | H |
| - | |
| With other boys I run and shout | J |
| I throw and catch the ball | K |
| Oh life is a right jolly thing | L |
| To take it all in all | K |
| - | |
| And what is life I asked a maid | M |
| Who trod as if on air | N |
| So lightly she did trip along | O |
| So bright she look'd and fair | N |
| - | |
| The maiden stopp'd her graceful steps | P |
| And to my words replied | Q |
| Oh life's a lovely dream she said | R |
| With some slight boons denied | Q |
| - | |
| But love and health and beauty crowns | S |
| My lot so filled with cheer | T |
| That joy beams forth from ev'rything | O |
| To favor'd mortals here | U |
| - | |
| The birds and flow'rs are fill'd with joy | E |
| With joy the birds do sing | O |
| The very rain that comes from heav'n | V |
| Seems loads of joy to bring | O |
| - | |
| And when I look to future years | W |
| The view seems brighter still | X |
| And brighter grow the perfum'd flow'rs | W |
| As I go up the hill | X |
| - | |
| And what is life I asked a man | V |
| A man of middle years | W |
| This world is truly call'd he said | R |
| A vale of bitter tears | W |
| - | |
| I thought this earth a bright fair spot | Y |
| But that was long ago | O |
| I view it now with truer sight | Z |
| And see a world of woe | O |
| - | |
| With disappointment and regret | A2 |
| And hopes thrown to the ground | B |
| I live but with an aching heart | B2 |
| I tread life's weary round | B |
| - | |
| And what is life This time a man | V |
| With hoary hair replied | Q |
| This life consists of gracious boons | W |
| With evils by their side | Q |
| - | |
| To leave the bad and choose the good | C2 |
| Is done but by the few | D2 |
| And that is why mankind are such | E2 |
| A discontented crew | D2 |
| - | |
| With greed the pleasure now is grasp'd | F2 |
| Or what they deem is so | O |
| Not thinking that each pleasure now | V |
| May bring a future woe | O |
| - | |
| My son take heed to what I say | W |
| And see thou mark it well | G2 |
| All earthly joys too much indulg'd | H2 |
| Will lead you down to hell | G2 |
| - | |
| For Heaven's sake I pray you now | V |
| To curb your youthful will | X |
| Nor give your headstrong passions play | W |
| To use their deadly skill | X |
| - | |
| There's joy my son all through this life | I2 |
| To meet as well as woe | O |
| And if mankind would act aright | H2 |
| Much more of it they'd know | O |
| - | |
| With prudence virtue for your friends | W |
| And caution by your side | H2 |
| And faith in God's o'erruling pow'r | J2 |
| Your life will calmly glide | H2 |
| - | |
| Content to bear the ills you meet | H2 |
| Mix'd always with your joy | E |
| For human prudence can't avert | H2 |
| Some woes which still annoy | E |
| - | |
| Pray that your mind be strong and clear | T |
| And vigorous your frame | K2 |
| Your heart inspir'd with love and fear | T |
| For your Creator's name | K2 |
