While poets sing in lofty strainA
And ask where Rome and Carthage areB
This humble village on the plainA
To many hearts is dearer farB
-
Then to these hearts I'll sing my layC
With humble Kelvin for my themeD
My song shall be of life to dayC
And not a retrospective dreamD
-
Of Kelvin's Grove some love lorn swainA
Sang sweetly many years agoE
And I shall sound the name againF
Although I may not sound it soE
-
Of Kelvin's bonnie lasses IG
Can sing tho' not so well as heH
And Kelvin's groves in passing byG
I can repeat have charms for meH
-
And Kelvin's stream where fishes glideI
And timid fowl their plumage laveJ
Where drooping willows by its sideI
Their graceful branches gently waveJ
-
Here happiness and plenty reignA
And e'en refinement too is seenK
For music sends its cheering strainA
Where flowers grow within the greenK
-
Here virtuous dames with busy handL
Untiring do what should be doneM
And sons and fathers till the landL
And to each manly duty runM
-
The winsome maids with willing heartsN
In youthful beauty all aglowE
Right cheerfully perform their partsN
Where duty's voice may bid them goE
-
Oh may their graceful figures longO
Their youthful energy retainA
And may they meet no heartless wrongO
To fill their gentle souls with painA
-
As yet there is no village bellP
Save that which rings the call to schoolQ
Where festive youth drink at the wellP
Which flows from knowledge' sparkling poolQ
-
And yet whene'er the Sabbath comesR
Or week night held for praise and prayerS
No need for signal bells and drumsR
Each knows the time and he is thereS
-
There is the daughter there the sonM
To kneel in humble prayer to GodT
And those whose race is well nigh runM
Who humbly kiss the chast'ning rodT
-
Oh blest content and lowly lifeU
That blunts Ambition's biting stingV
Unknown to thee the bitter strifeU
Which proud refinements often bringV
