Where once the red deer wolf or bear	A
Pursued by hardy Indian braves	B
Lay low in cunning grove or lair	A
And listen'd to the rolling waves	B

Where once the maple and the beech	C
In nature's splendor tower'd high	D
Far far beyond the white man's reach	C
Was this lone spot in years gone by	D

The lofty bank and level plain	E
With wide mouth'd maitland stretch'd to view	F
Look'd out upon the inland main	E
And back where virgin forests grew	F
	-
No harbor then nor water break	G
Made by the mind and hand of man	H
But fast into the rolling lake	G
In nature's course the river ran	H
	-
No pennon stream'd from lofty mast	I
No ships were there propell'd by steam	J
For then instead of whistle blast	I
Was heard the lordly eagle's scream	J

The light canoe of birchen rind	K
Sent o'er the waves by skilful oar	L
Express'd so plain the untrain'd mind	K
Content with this it wish'd no more	L
	-
No chimneys tall and massive made	M
Show'd where the white man ground his corn	N
For there no white man yet had stray'd	M
Where but the forest child was born	N

And now where spacious mansions stand	O
Where grace and culture now reside	P
There clasp'd the Indian brave the hand	O
Of his own war won forest bride	P

Where once the painted warrior wrote	Q
His thoughts in rudely pictur'd signs	R
A cultur'd language now we quote	Q
And write and print in graceful lines	R
	-
Where once the hieroglyphic bark	S
Told when the warlike bow should twang	T
The torch of light with glowing spark	S
Is held aloft by faithful Strang	U
	-
But there is yet another flame	V
With pure and holy light to shed	W
And all revere that honor'd name	V
And all respect that rev'rend head	W
	-
That hoary head which from the place	X
Where mild religion's beams doth play	Y
Hath warn'd implor'd our fallen race	X
And pray'd while years have pass'd away	Y
	-
Beneficent and kind old man	H
Accept our humble tributes now	Z
And when is run thine earthly span	H
May fadeless wreathes entwine thy brow	Z
