Where once the red deer wolf or bearA
Pursued by hardy Indian bravesB
Lay low in cunning grove or lairA
And listen'd to the rolling wavesB
-
Where once the maple and the beechC
In nature's splendor tower'd highD
Far far beyond the white man's reachC
Was this lone spot in years gone byD
-
The lofty bank and level plainE
With wide mouth'd maitland stretch'd to viewF
Look'd out upon the inland mainE
And back where virgin forests grewF
-
No harbor then nor water breakG
Made by the mind and hand of manH
But fast into the rolling lakeG
In nature's course the river ranH
-
No pennon stream'd from lofty mastI
No ships were there propell'd by steamJ
For then instead of whistle blastI
Was heard the lordly eagle's screamJ
-
The light canoe of birchen rindK
Sent o'er the waves by skilful oarL
Express'd so plain the untrain'd mindK
Content with this it wish'd no moreL
-
No chimneys tall and massive madeM
Show'd where the white man ground his cornN
For there no white man yet had stray'dM
Where but the forest child was bornN
-
And now where spacious mansions standO
Where grace and culture now resideP
There clasp'd the Indian brave the handO
Of his own war won forest brideP
-
Where once the painted warrior wroteQ
His thoughts in rudely pictur'd signsR
A cultur'd language now we quoteQ
And write and print in graceful linesR
-
Where once the hieroglyphic barkS
Told when the warlike bow should twangT
The torch of light with glowing sparkS
Is held aloft by faithful StrangU
-
But there is yet another flameV
With pure and holy light to shedW
And all revere that honor'd nameV
And all respect that rev'rend headW
-
That hoary head which from the placeX
Where mild religion's beams doth playY
Hath warn'd implor'd our fallen raceX
And pray'd while years have pass'd awayY
-
Beneficent and kind old manH
Accept our humble tributes nowZ
And when is run thine earthly spanH
May fadeless wreathes entwine thy browZ
