'Tis morning and the meadows yetA
Are wet with gracious drops of dewB
Each blade of grass and flow'r is setA
With sparkling gems of richest hueB
The sun with rising glory shedsC
A radiance that none divineD
Save those who early leave their bedsC
When glist'ning dew drops briefly shineD
-
Just ere the rising sunbeams playE
From glorious orb of rosy redF
There is no sound of life no humG
And but seemingly all things are deadF
-
But when the blessed welcome beamsH
Light up and cheer and warm the earthI
All things awaken from their dreamsH
To celebrate Creation's birthI
-
The very fields are filled with lifeJ
With hum of bee and insect throngK
The woods are vocal with the strifeJ
Of friendly rivalry in songK
But 'tis the Sabbath morn and nowL
Are heard no sounds of industryM
Save milk maid calling to her cowL
Or buzzing of the toilsome beeM
-
Or save perhaps the gentle neighJ
Of horses answering the callN
For mother father child to dayE
Must hear the holy words that fallN
From lips that pray with them and preachO
To them the old old words of cheerP
They must receive the sounds that teachO
Those solemn truths they love to hearQ
-
But now the sun's increasing heatR
Hath dried the dew and warm'd the airS
The feather'd songsters now retreatR
Fann'd by the sun's relentless glareS
The morning service now is o'erT
The pastor kindly greeted tooB
And after greetings at the doorU
They all their homeward way pursueB
