He just had reached the time of lifeA
When cares are felt by menB
But when they're strong to bear them wellC
A score of years and tenB
Heigh ho says he and this is lifeA
The dream of earlier yearsD
In which we see so much of joyE
And naught of bitter tearsF
-
I've lived a half a score of yearsD
In search of fame and gloryG
For all earth's boasted joys I've soughtH
But ah what is the storyG
-
The story 'tis the same old taleI
Told long long years agoJ
But strange each for himself must learnK
This earth's a 'fleeting show '-
-
The dreams of sanguine hopeful youthL
Are chiefly dreams aloneM
Whose falseness often breaks the heartN
Or turns it into stoneM
Fame's or ambition's giddy heightO
Is only seldom gain'dP
And often half the pleasure leavesQ
Just when the height's attain'dP
-
But still I strive and still I hopeR
And still I fight the battleS
Besieg'd by earth's artilleryG
With all its horrid rattleS
Then come ye mocking earthly foesT
E'en come like fiends of hellC
I'll fight the battle till I dieU
And I will fight it wellC
-
I'll change my tactics quickly tho'L
Fight on a diff'rent lineV
And on my waving battle flagW
I'll mark a diff'rent signV
Until this present moment IU
Have fought in single strifeA
But I will fight no more aloneM
I'll get myself a wifeA
-
We'll then fight all who dare opposeT
E'en should it be her brotherX
And when we've vanquish'd all our foesT
We'll turn and fight each otherX
