The shepherd callsA
How these great niountain wallsA
Re echo See his dogB
Come limping from the bogC
How far he holds himD
With that thin clamour Scolds himD
Or cheers him whichE
Say both most like The pitchE
Is steep poor fellowF
And still that bellowF
Ya yaG
Whoop ' tittivatH
And Echo from her nicheE
Shrieks challenged ShoutH
O shepherd floutH
The irritable Echo till she ravesI
As man behavesI
So God apportions doing what is bestH
For you and for the restH
As man behaves You do not help me muchJ
Nay sir nor touchJ
The central point at allK
Retributive mechanicalL
I see it But outside all thisM
I miss I missM
Sir know you DeathN
Permit me introduceO
No What's the useO
The use One thing I can collectH
You have but scant respectH
For Death Why sir he made a feintH
That very minute at you quaintH
The way he grins and skips Whips whipsP
Down down good dog good DeathN
To heel you rogueQ
Good Death good dogB
You'd rather not behold himD
I've told him I' faithR
He'd frighten you would DeathN
Provoked me yes you didH
The shepherd chidH
His lagging houndH
I had no other thoughtH
But how mad Echo caughtH
The soundH
Of that exasperant callK
And made it boundH
Back from the mountain wallK
