The King's Son Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIHI ABAB JIJI

Who rideth through the driving rainA
At such a headlong speedB
Naked and pale he rides amainA
Upon a naked steedB
-
Nor hollow nor height his going barsC
His wet steed shines like silkD
His head is golden to the starsC
And his limbs are white as milkD
-
But lo he dwindles as the lightE
That lifts from a black mereF
And as the fair youth wanes from sightE
The steed grows mightierG
-
What wizard by yon holy treeH
Mutters unto the skyI
Where Macha's flame tongued horses fleeH
On hoofs of thunder byI
-
Ah 'tis not holy so to banA
The youth of kingly seedB
Ah woe the wasting of a manA
Who changes to a steedB
-
Nightly upon the Plain of KingsJ
When Macha's day is nighI
He gallops and the dark wind bringsJ
His lonely human cryI
