The day of tumult strife defeat was o'erA
Worn out with toil and noise and scorn and spleenB
I slumbered and in slumber saw once moreC
A room in an old mansion long unseenB
-
That room methought was curtained from the lightD
Yet through the curtains shone the moon's cold rayE
Full on a cradle where in linen whiteD
Sleeping life's first soft sleep an infant layE
-
Pale flickered on the hearth the dying flameF
And all was silent in that ancient hallG
Save when by fits on the low night wind cameF
The murmur of the distant waterfallG
-
And lo the fairy queens who rule our birthH
Drew nigh to speak the new born baby's doomI
With noiseless step which left no trace on earthH
From gloom they came and vanished into gloomI
-
Not deigning on the boy a glance to castJ
Swept careless by the gorgeous Queen of GainK
More scornful still the Queen of Fashion passedJ
With mincing gait and sneer of cold disdainK
-
The Queen of Power tossed high her jewelled headL
And o'er her shoulder threw a wrathful frownM
The Queen of Pleasure on the pillow shedL
Scarce one stray rose leaf from her fragrant crownM
-
Still Fay in long procession followed FayE
And still the little couch remained unblestL
But when those wayward sprites had passed awayE
Came One the last the mightiest and the bestL
-
Oh glorious lady with the eyes of lightL
And laurels clustering round thy lofty browN
Who by the cradle's side didst watch that nightL
Warbling a sweet strange music who wast thouN
-
quot Yes darling let them go quot so ran the strainK
quot Yes let them go gain fashion pleasure powerA
And all the busy elves to whose domainK
Belongs the nether sphere the fleeting hourA
-
quot Without one envious sigh one anxious schemeO
The nether sphere the fleeting hour resignP
Mine is the world of thought the world of dreamO
Mine all the past and all the future mineP
-
quot Fortune that lays in sport the mighty lowQ
Age that to penance turns the joys of youthR
Shall leave untouched the gifts which I bestowQ
The sense of beauty and the thirst of truthR
-
quot Of the fair brotherhood who share my graceS
I from thy natal day pronounce thee freeT
And if for some I keep a nobler placeS
I keep for none a happier than for theeT
-
quot There are who while to vulgar eyes they seemO
Of all my bounties largely to partakeU
Of me as of some rival's handmaid deemO
And court me but for gain's power's fashion's sakeU
-
quot To such though deep their lore though wide their fameF
Shall my great mysteries be all unknownV
But thou through good and evil praise and blameF
Wilt not thou love me for myself aloneV
-
quot Yes thou wilt love me with exceeding loveW
And I will tenfold all that love repayE
Still smiling though the tender may reproveW
Still faithful though the trusted may betrayE
-
quot For aye mine emblem was and aye shall beT
The ever during plant whose bough I wearX
Brightest and greenest then when every treeT
That blossoms in the light of Time is bareX
-
quot In the dark hour of shame I deigned to standL
Before the frowning peers at Bacon's sideL
On a far shore I smoothed with tender handL
Through months of pain the sleepless bed of HydeL
-
quot I brought the wise and brave of ancient daysY
To cheer the cell where Raleigh pined aloneV
I lighted Milton's darkness with the blazeY
Of the bright ranks that guard the eternal throneV
-
quot And even so my child it is my pleasureA
That thou not then alone shouldst feel me nighW
When in domestic bliss and studious leisureA
Thy weeks uncounted come uncounted flyW
-
quot Not then alone when myriads closely pressedL
Around thy car the shout of triumph raiseY
Nor when in gilded drawing rooms thy breastL
Swells at the sweeter sound of woman's praiseY
-
quot No when on restless night dawns cheerless morrowQ
When weary soul and wasting body pineP
Thine am I still in danger sickness sorrowQ
In conflict obloquy want exile thineP
-
quot Thine where on mountain waves the snowbirds screamO
Where more than Thule's winter barbs the breezeZ
Where scarce through lowering clouds one sickly gleamO
Lights the drear May day of Antarctic seasZ
-
quot Thine when around thy litter's track all dayE
White sandhills shall reflect the blinding glareX
Thine when through forests breathing death thy wayE
All night shall wind by many a tiger's lairX
-
quot Thine most when friends turn pale when traitors flyW
When hard beset thy spirit justly proudL
For truth peace freedom mercy dares defyW
A sullen priesthood and a raving crowdL
-
quot Amidst the din of all things fell and vileA2
Hate's yell and envy's hiss and folly's brayE
Remember me and with an unforced smileA2
See riches baubles flatterers pass awayE
-
quot Yes they will pass away nor deem it strangeB2
They come and go as comes and goes the seaT
And let them come and go thou through all changeB2
Fix thy firm gaze on virtue and on me quotL
