Lines To The Memory Of Pitt Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD AEAE FGFG FHFH

Oh Britain dear Isle when the annals of storyA
Shall tell of the deeds that thy children have doneB
When the strains of each poet shall sing of their gloryA
And the triumphs their skill and their valour have wonB
-
When the olive and palm in thy chaplet are blendedC
When thy arts and thy fame and thy commerce increaseD
When thy arms through the uttermost coasts are extendedC
And thy war is triumphant and happy thy peaceD
-
When the ocean whose waves like a rampart flow round theeA
Conveying thy mandates to every shoreE
And the empire of nature no longer can bound theeA
And the world be the scene of thy conquests no moreE
-
Remember the man who in sorrow and dangerF
When thy glory was set and thy spirit was lowG
When thy hopes were o'erturned by the arms of the strangerF
And thy banners displayed in the halls of the foeG
-
Stood forth in the tempest of doubt and disasterF
Unaided and single the danger to braveH
Asserted thy claims and the rights of his masterF
Preserved thee to conquer and saved thee to saveH
