On that great that awful dayA
This vain world shall pass awayA
Thus the sibyl sang of oldB
Thus hath holy David toldB
There shall be a deadly fearC
When the Avenger shall appearC
And unveiled before his eyeD
All the works of man shall lieD
Hark to the great trumpet's tonesE
Pealing o'er the place of bonesE
Hark it waketh from their bedF
All the nations of the deadF
In a countless throng to meetG
At the eternal judgment seatG
Nature sickens with dismayA
Death may not retain its preyA
And before the Maker standH
All the creatures of his handH
The great book shall be unfurledI
Whereby God shall judge the worldI
What was distant shall be nearC
What was hidden shall be clearC
To what shelter shall I flyD
To what guardian shall I cryD
Oh in that destroying hourJ
Source of goodness Source of powerJ
Show thou of thine own free graceK
Help unto a helpless raceK
Though I plead not at thy throneL
Aught that I for thee have doneM
Do not thou unmindful beN
Of what thou hast borne for meN
Of the wandering of the scornO
Of the scourge and of the thornO
Jesus hast thou borne the painP
And hath all been borne in vainP
Shall thy vengeance smite the headF
For whose ransom thou hast bledF
Thou whose dying blessing gaveQ
Glory to a guilty slaveQ
Thou who from the crew uncleanR
Didst release the MagdaleneR
Shall not mercy vast and freeN
Evermore be found in theeN
Father turn on me thine eyesS
See my blushes hear my criesS
Faint though be the cries I makeT
Save me for thy mercy's sakeT
From the worm and from the fireJ
From the torments of thine ireU
Fold me with the sheep that standH
Pure and safe at thy right handH
Hear thy guilty child implore theeN
Rolling in the dust before theeN
Oh the horrors of that dayA
When this frame of sinful clayA
Starting from its burial placeK
Must behold thee face to faceK
Hear and pity hear and aidV
Spare the creatures thou hast madeV
Mercy mercy save forgiveW
Oh who shall look on thee and liveX
