O soul that art essential changeA
Bickering beams a flutter strangeA
Lightning of thought and gust of passionB
A silver thread in this mountain rangeA
-
The waters of thy shimmering rillC
More real are they than granite hillC
Thy tremulous waves of mystic feelingD
Nourish a life of enduring willC
-
The sun and moon from spacious heightE
And stars may crumble into nightE
Why shouldst thou cease to move foreverF
A living glow of eternal lightE
-
-
-
Spirit of Song life's golden rayG
That burneth in this house of clayG
Despite the stress of blast and tempestH
To quench the flickering light and playG
-
Rapture of seraphs bright thou artI
Yet kindlest in the human heartI
The fluid soul's upbreathed emotionB
Whose light shines clear as a star apartI
-
A fairer light of sweeter fameJ
Than science knows to praise or blameJ
Wherein the soul has open visionB
And feels the glow of His holy flameJ
-
-
-
Impressions vast and vague flow inK
From Somewhat that to me is kinK
Shall I assemble them all carelessL
In the mind's garret or waste dust binK
-
Nay In solution in the soul'sL
Own hot equators frosty polesL
I'll more and more their import cherishM
Their deeps on deeps to my shelving shoalsL
-
O heart with tentacles in seaL
Like oral disked anemoneN
Taste thou the wine of shoreless oceansL
And feed on food that was meant for theeL
-
-
-
'Tis fit the bloodroot in white hoodO
Should brave the parting winter's moodP
Come thou pale violet streaked sweet scentedQ
Beside the runs of this tempered woodO
-
I hunger for thy gentle faceL
Sweetest of all the wildwood raceL
O flower at once ideal and essenceL
Why stayest thou from thy wonted placeL
-
Thou art not dead Nay when death creptR
Upon thy form thy full life leaptR
Defiance at the harsh destroyerF
And slept as seed Thou hast oversleptR
-
-
-
The sweep O heart of Love's accountS
Hearken I am of life the FountS
All are within My deeps of BeingD
The toiling city the sea the mountS
-
Yea when thou cleav'st the pillared treeL
Raisest the stone I am with theeL
Darkness and light flux and becomingD
Signal My presence and ceaselesslyL
-
Regard Me not as though afarT
Ope thine heart's eyes and lo My StarT
Burns 'neath Time's vesture true ShekinahN
Centre and Soul of the things that areT
-
-
-
Superbest power with sweetness wedS
The inner eye doth overspreadS
And vasts of nature blend as beautyS
Suffused with awe at the Fountain HeadS
-
The stream of power that floweth hereU
I see in pageant of the yearV
Aye shimmering as light and shadowS
A wonderment on the verge of fearV
-
The world's not dead but animateS
And gives as free to mean as greatS
Wealth of true power is not a kingdomW
Of time and place but the soul's estateS
-
-
-
Above the scarred cliff's iron browX
There speeds the fruitful crooked plowX
While on the soft west wind come odorsL
Of plumy pine and of balsam boughX
-
Here at the base another sightS
It ceaseth not by day nor nightS
Ormudz and Ahriman contendingD
Destroyer dark and White Soul of lightS
-
Bared by life's ever beating brineN
The rocky bases that defineN
Of good and ill the place of meetingD
Be bugle call to this heart of mineN
-
-
-
After the winds there is surceaseL
Take courage heart and be at peaceL
The printless beach all combed and shiningD
In beauty lies with its windrow fleeceL
-
Impetuous as a torrent's speedS
White horses raced this watery meadS
With manes of chrysoprase aflowingD
Each neighing loud to its neighbour steedS
-
The wastes that finger pebbly shoresL
Unplowed by ship nor cut by oarsL
His music wake as sweet as attarF
And flash in light as the heavenly floorsL
-
-
-
Filled oft with portents oft withdrawnN
My inward skies from earliest dawnN
To this full hour have borne their witnessL
Of one who out of the darkness shoneN
-
The soul is dowered with awful thingsL
Mystic as sound of unseen wingsL
The sense of God of Law of DutyS
Of Life and Destiny Signet ringsL
-
Flash on these fingers of one handS
The Hand of God The mean the grandS
Tremble beneath the fearsome covertS
Till lurid sky with the Rainbow's spannedS
-
-
-
Who loveth not the elm tree fairY
A fountain green in summer airY
Whose tremulous spray cools the faint meadowS
And croons to all of a careless careY
-
It shades the city's paven wayG
Where redbreast knows the white moon's rayG
It sentinels the moss grown homesteadS
And waits the men of a coming dayG
-
Its curving lines that fill the sightS
Like mellow meteor's path of lightS
Or orb d spring of walls of azureF
My spirit greet from the infiniteS
-
-
-
Men plow and sow while moves the sunN
Away away from work begunN
Ofttimes they've heard Seedtime and harvestS
Are sure the word of the Sovereign OneN
-
We link our deeds with law supremeZ
In field and flood in wood and streamZ
We test Omnipotence by laborF
And reap rewards of no idle dreamZ
-
Obedience is the astringent wineN
That's quaffed by strenuous souls and fineN
Of cloudy doubt the heavenly solventS
The Christ's elixir of life divineN
-
-
-
Doubt flies before the truth that's quiredS
When earth in living green 's attiredS
As ghosts before the daystar's risingD
The grass is ever God finger spiredS
-
When life is low my awe stirred soulA2
No vision has of nature's wholeA2
It would unsheathe a weapon nakedS
And cut the bands of divine controlA2
-
The Nazarene knows no decreaseL
He shed His beams on Rome and GreeceL
O radiant is His word ConsiderF
The springing grass and have rest and peaceL
-
-
-
The bird of needle beak and breastS
Of orange flame doth weave its nestS
At tip of branch a cradle swingingD
To all the airs of the south and westS
-
Who schooled thy needle to beginN
Its forth and back and out and inN
Till plaited cot a gourd like pendantS
Shall temper winds to thy first of kinN
-
Thy sun bright mate his joy to proveB2
Flutes sweet his ardors from aboveC2
O golden robin skyey nestedS
Thou rockest safe in the arms of LoveC2
-
-
-
Pure lily open on the breastS
Of toiling waters' much unrestS
Thy simple soul mounts up in worshipD2
Like ecstasy of a spirit blestS
-
Thy wealth of ivory and goldS
All that thou hast thou dost unfoldS
Fixed in the unseen thy life breathes upwardS
A heavenly essence from out earth's mouldS
-
Now comes the chill and dusk of nightS
Folds up thy precious gold and whiteS
Thy casket sinks within veiled bosomW
To ope the richer in morrow's lightS
-
-
-
Revolving without rest and goalA2
The way of life of budding soulA2
From seed to leaf and stalk I see itS
From leaf to bloom and from bloom to wholeA2
-
About the Daystar God indweltS
It turneth to His influence feltS
Till dusk beam smitten into daylightS
It in the palpitant heavens doth meltS
-
Lift lift ye gates of endless noonsL
That entrance yield on God's own boonsL
Of liberty as law in fruitageA
And timeless months of transcendent JunesL
-
-
-
O June has lit her splendid lampE2
In the broad meadow lush and dampE2
Where loves the brook in loops to loiterF
And tufted vernal to pitch its campE2
-
Last night she veiled the starlit skyD
And walked beside the brook so shyD
She took from out her beating bosomW
A lighted orchis and passed on highD
-
At dawn July came o'er the hillsL
O light of eye and deep heart thrillsL
As she beheld the glowing orchisL
Whose splendor now all the meadow fillsL
-
-
-
A quiet breath distils in calmF2
And fills the fields with honeyed balmF2
It cools the rose's cheek and rollethL
In drops of dew on the poppy's palmF2
-
Each crystal globe filled full of fireF
And flashing like a color pyreF
All heavened beneath the eye of morningD
To sate the hunger of day's desireF
-
O Breath divine that form and hueG2
And ecstasy of light and blueG2
Gave to Orion and the PleiadsL
Thou hast begotten the orbs of dewG2
-
-
-
Far off and veiled it seems to meS
The face of yester dreamy seaS
That breathed so soft its shining watersL
Pungent with odors of rosemaryS
-
No sculptured arabesque to dayS
But unhewn strength in mighty playS
That heaves the ship on bursting billowS
And smites the cliff in its ancient wayS
-
Beneath its silken vestments beatS
A lion heart of jungle heatS
Its couchant soul delights in battleH2
To fell the rock and to whelm the fleetS
-
-
-
Vast promise is the sea and vastS
Its pain Its secret is held fastS
Now hope's wide open eye and sunnyS
And now a weeping and wailing pastS
-
I have a grievance unredrestS
That stings my heart and rends my breastS
Perhaps it gathers in its bosomW
The sorrows wild of the world's opprestS
-
Deformity or pain unstringsL
The music of the soul of thingsL
Ah suns burn bright in eyes of pantherF
And lightnings leap in the eagle's wingsL
-
-
-
Calm soul unkindled by the sightS
Of open heavens at noon of nightS
Thou'lt dread the fires of day of judgmentS
When roll the skies as a parchment slightS
-
He waits not for that upward gazeL
The world is full of judgment daysL
And every night the page is writtenN
An atheist or Behold he praysL
-
Ah me These lights so manifoldS
So silvern new so golden oldS
Do witness swift like fires of vengeanceL
Against indifferent hearts and coldS
-
-
-
There are no solitudes to viewG2
The whole world lies in drop of dewG2
From where it hangs all space is openN
It neighbors stars of the crystal blueG2
-
This open vision has my soulA2
Athrill with silent organ rollA2
Of immanence divine and feels itS
Upgather all in harmonious wholeA2
-
Deep waves of God's vast music clearV
That pulse one choral atmosphereV
Of Love's concordant purposes andS
Fore score the song of His golden yearV
-
-
-
If mighty angels fair and tallI2
Each robed as priestly seneschalI2
On altar suns burn incense dailyI2
As wheel the systems to Love's sweet callI2
-
Earth's sun is sure an altar roseL
Abloom from dawn to day's bright closeL
The mighty angel stoops above itS
With pulsing wings as it golden glowsL
-
To fan the incense waves through spaceL
When buds the light or folds its graceL
He lifts erect his glorious statureF
Kindling the sky from his ruddy faceL
-
-
-
Across the hills the cattle callI2
As black the boding shadows fallI2
Zigzag the lightning writes its messageA
That's thundered forth from the mountain wallI2
-
From out the overhanging frownN
The loosened rain comes rattling downN
The swallow's gone the daisy cowersL
But joy to fields in their tan and brownN
-
The burnished cypher of the skyD
Now lets the loud tongued thunder dieD
Nature's delight a timeless raptureF
Glows in her face and rekindled eyeD
-
-
-
The trees of God the prophet saidS
Great trees with sap and laurelled headS
Ay trees of God all strength all beautyI2
Wove by invisible Hand and threadS
-
With anchors flexed as lissome witheL
With boles like mighty monolithL
These arms of brawn outstretched in powerF
To brave the storms that would test their pithL
-
Lords of the scene in blasts and calmsL
The breath of life within their palmsL
They rhythmic sway in choral murmurF
While seas and suns chant their rolling psalmsL
-
-
-
The flecks of gold that glorifyD
The forest floors to loving eyeD
Withdraw from me a splendor lingersL
On trees of God in their crowns on highD
-
And as the arch with stars is sprentS
I hear balm dew from firmamentS
Drip richly from their whispering leafageA
To soothe the fields to a sweet contentS
-
In bloom of dark they softly stirF
Till arrowy dawn the shadow blurF
Dispels God's tingling kiss of morningD
On oak and maple and pine and firF
-
-
-
The ideal is a lifting skyD
Wherein my soul may upward flyD
It moveth as I onward journeyI2
Solace of heart and the light of eyeD
-
Spirit to spirit Thus is wroughtS
All that uplifts the world of thoughtS
Or wings the soul with aspirationN
By which the life to its height is broughtS
-
Great souls the mount of vision trodS
While plumy fire their sandals shodS
They saw the unseen and eternalI2
O life is life when 'tis seen in GodS
-
-
-
The spirit firm and swelling soulI2
Are heart of noble self controlI2
Sources of power transmuting dangerF
To clarion call to the man as wholeI2
-
'Tis courage helms the bark that's tostS
By wild typhoon or swept by frostS
While sailing life's surprising oceanN
Strike sail to fear and the bark is lostS
-
O muse thou sing'st no siren strainN
To him who plows this heaven domed mainN
Thy starry eyes look down all wistfulI2
On souls that toy with a tangled skeinN
-
-
-
Man's highest word as God's aboveC2
The golden word of words is loveC2
Its whisper is the soul's one raptureF
Its voice the voice of the brooding doveC2
-
Immortal rose of joy elateS
Thy perfume's waft by palace gateS
Or hovel door in cloud or sunshineN
That breath of Eden which all hearts waitS
-
Ensouled in clay man's glory isL
Yet love dilates this soul of hisL
Till chrysalis of earth be shatteredS
And comes the answer to Psyche's quizL
-
-
-
Love bows herself in holy prayerY
To worship ever the All FairY
She coins her heart in largess goldenN
And beggars self on her altar stairY
-
Love lifts her hands that liker yetS
To One whom on the way she metS
All hearts may glow as sea to sky lightS
Till earth shall never its heaven forgetS
-
Love bears upon her ardent breastS
The fainting ones in east and westS
And yearning cries Let come Thy kingdomW
Be Thou of sorrowing hearts the guestS
-
-
-
As on a hill top near the sunN
The stars are unseen every oneN
While from its base within the valleyI2
Their festal pomp is e'en now begunN
-
So lowly lives 'mid shadows passedS
Have higher skies above them massedS
See galaxies and constellationsL
The many mansions o'er them englassedS
-
Encamped am I earth's not my homeJ2
The glory flashing 'neath yon domeJ2
Refusing to be leashed like musicD
Supernal is and it beckons ComeW
-
-
-
Sunshine O soul is not a moodS
Open the life unto the goodS
The great sun globes itself at morningD
In dewy lawns but 'tis dark in woodS
-
Up up and purge thy spirit's sightS
See wheeling wings superb in flightS
Of golden eagle's aspirationN
E'en thus aspire to the Central LightS
-
In loom divine the clouds are woveK2
And shot with hues of irised doveC2
The blinding shafts of light to temperF
With airy curtains of Love's own loveC2
-
-
-
A bird on sudden as I writeS
Through open door in eager flightS
Seeks refuge from a falcon's talonsL
Upon my breast in its fearful plightS
-
Slight bird and dark in olive greenN
With yellow throat thy living sheenN
Doth come and go with thy heart's throbbingD
Safe safe art thou from his talons keenN
-
I am as God to thee poor thingD
Now take thee to thy heaven and singD
A virelay for thy deliveranceL
Sweet vireo of the olive wingD
-
-
-
Fresh sprig of greenest southernwoodS
Thou call'st me back to my childhoodS
Thy aromatic odors wakenN
A thousand echoes I hear the goodS
-
Old man of God long haired and tallI2
In the old church to great and smallI2
His lightning message give and listenN
The echoing thunder that rolled o'er allI2
-
The tiny child twirls oft its sprayS
Of southernwood 'tis a far dayS
Yet fresh I smell the keen aromaL2
See arms ahovering Let us prayS
-
-
-
I feel the season's dreamy callI2
In hawkbit asters 'pyeweed tallI2
Glory of August ere SeptemberF
Trumpet the note of the hasting fallI2
-
A flash in crystal waters coldS
O dream in silver red and goldS
The speckled trout above the gravelI2
Lies by the rock where the stream is rolledS
-
Grasshoppers chirp and crickets chirF
The rich tagged alders nod and purF
The kine bells drowse the distant pastureF
All nature waits for the coming stirF
-
-
-
This golden browed September landS
Is rich of heart and free of handS
Fresh from the mint of God and taintlessL
Are flung her guineas of gold like sandS
-
Here where the road winds round the hillI2
And down beside the tidal millI2
Marsh goldenrod and its plumed sisterF
Their spangled ore in a largess spillI2
-
The Sabbath sabbatize said HeI2
This gold is sacred unto meI2
Rich gift of God unknown of mammonN
Kingdom of Heaven by the roadside freeI2
-
-
-
I keep one picture in my heartS
To be of life a cherished partS
A picture waiting yet its canvasL
From master hand of divinest artS
-
A wan blind man and Christ sun brownN
Hand in His hand are walking downN
The throng d street into the openN
Beyond the walls of Bethsaida townN
-
Light of the world with night in kissL
Pathetic scene a scene of blissL
The rayless eyes are touched to healingD
Was ever picture so sweet as thisL
-
-
-
As turns my heart its crimson leavesL
And life's own diary freshly weavesL
I see the pages glow intenserI2
A wondrous story my bosom heavesL
-
Beneath the careless lines there writS
Appear in beauty clear sunlitS
Mysterious Love's own tender storyI2
How this poor heart to His own was knitS
-
Mine mine while moons the waters moveB2
Mine while Heaven lasts and Love is LoveC2
Methinks He hid this sweet love favorI2
That I might find it my treasure troveK2
-
-
-
Sure in this realm of Sense and TimeM2
Passes an endless pantomimeM2
Of life and thought whose tone and colorI2
A shadow is of a heavenly primeM2
-
The rose unfolds from the unseenN
It was not to the senses keenN
'Tis broken to the vision softlyI2
A crown of crowns of the summer's greenN
-
In hushed and breathless Beauty's nameJ
From out the veiled deeps as flameJ
It comes a thing of sense of spiritS
And passeth out by the way it cameJ
-
-
-
All day an ashen light sereneN
Has brooded o'er this longed for sceneN
Its tints and damask flush all hidingD
As if obscured by a dusky screenN
-
Here when a child I used to lieD
For hours and watch the clouds go byD
See the black shadows climb the mountainN
Or safely ride o'er the billowy ryeD
-
O Beauty shy as sylvan runN
Demure as some sweet hooded nunN
And wrapt about with grey of gloamingD
Unveil thy face to the sinking sunN
-
-
-
Never before has my ear heardS
A sweeter music passion stirredS
Nor depth and purity so azurnN
Of breathing dawn and of morning birdS
-
She comes in heyday of her bloodS
Over the groves and waiting floodS
The air is vital with her presenceL
And banners wave from the woodbine's budS
-
AEolian sylphs touch soft their lutesL
Brooks tinkle tinkle past the rootsL
As Beauty hidden in the coverI2
Fingers the stops of her melting flutesL
-
-
-
Dimly beheld thou excellentS
Ideal of grace 'tis ravishmentS
To breathe thy atmosphere O BeautyS
Whene'er thou stirr'st in thy greening tentS
-
I cannot see thee as thou artS
Nor trace thy goings but in partS
O dearer thus like starry musicD
Half heard that thrills with its string my heartS
-
If thou shouldst part thy sheeny veilI2
And strike thy fires my heart would quailI2
Beneath the eye of naked gloryS
The molten sun as the moon be paleI2
-
-
-
Fair as the light on fire tipt hillsL
From out her hollow hand she spillsL
The pale and powdery moonbeams siftingD
O'er sleeping farms and the winking rillsL
-
The silvered leaves smile in their sleepN2
Headlands their hoary watches keepN2
The glimmering ships the moonglade furrowI2
The path where beauty fore walks the deepN2
-
And now the powdery beam is thrownN
On marguerite and pearl moonstoneN
On fluffy bird with wing awearyI2
Soft dreaming child 'tis her silver blownN
-
-
-
With lathe of viewless hyalineN
She shapes the shell and scale and finN
Dropping unseen her pearls of moonlightS
And blushes all as her kith and kinN
-
Distaff of light is in her handS
From which she spins the lily andS
The sendal robes of field and forestS
With dewy odors in every strandS
-
And from her snow white palette's dyesL
She paints the peacock's hundred eyesL
The robin's egg the apple blossomW
And domes the world with her sapphire skiesL
-
-
-
Her steps fall sweet as summer rainN
And lull to dream the thoughts of painN
O glowing grass O violet skyeyD
Ye hint of something of fairer grainN
-
She outruns sympathy of crowdsL
Her dwelling is above the cloudsL
She stoops to kiss the rose to crimsonN
Her face no featureless mask enshroudsL
-
Her chatelaine's of amber fineN
No hue of coming autumn's wineN
But she outpours from tawny beakerI2
And fills each grape of the swelling vineN
-
-
-
Celestial sweetness swift outstripsL
The light unleashed of its eclipseL
A fire of dew burns in her bosomW
And steady glows through her eyes and lipsL
-
She holds fair forms of ferns and seedsL
Lichens and fruits and burnished reedsL
And pours in wake of mellow harvestS
Splendors of flame on the leaves and weedsL
-
O give give me my own of thatS
Which sweeps and circles like the batS
Around me as I walk in etherI2
O fair Divine at whose feet I've satS
-
-
-
Unnumbered traits shine in thy faceL
Harmonious blent in Time and SpaceL
Ideal of form of tone of colorI2
Of thought emotion and deed O GraceL
-
Ay me I speak familiar wordsL
Thou art a presence of my Lord'sL
Spirit of splendor thou O BeautyS
That lights His brow and that crowns and girdsL
-
O Christ Thou bright Heaven's Morning StarI2
In whom all live and move and areI2
Thou Chiefest altogether lovelyS
Beauty in Time is Thy avatarI2
-
-
-
The scarlet arch of evening fillsL
Heights o'er the vapor laden hillsL
With brilliant samite robes that flutterI2
Something beneath that my spirit thrillsL
-
O Infinite and Whom I blessL
Glow of embodied perfectnessL
O Sea of supersensuous BeingD
Whose tides the unutterable expressL
-
This this it was that Plato sawL
On back of Heaven Let self withdrawL
From this o'ermastering light and splendorI2
These rolling waves of a trembling aweO2
-
-
-
This tiny life with exquisite wingsL
Is one with all earth's moving thingsL
The light that burns in great ArcturusL
Is tinct with gold of our wedding ringsL
-
In every fibre every jotS
The universe is one I wotS
Great God Thou'rt One and we Thy offspringD
Can see some angles of Thy wide thoughtS
-
Thy footprints mark the ageless yearsL
Thy hand authenticates the spheresL
The voice of Time the hush eternalI2
One anthem sound in Thy listening earsL
-
-
-
Philosophy doth dig and drawL
Instinct translateth into lawL
The universe in one God dwellingD
The poet's vision forekenned with aweO2
-
He is a seer in night of TimeM2
Casting red foregleams in his rhymeM2
Of rising stars on man's horizonN
Herald of truth of a choral climeM2
-
Impassioned truth from inward deepsL
That oft like lightning sudden leapsL
From darkness blazing a far pathwayS
To hills of God which the sunlight steepsL
-
-
-
The infinite in grand reposeL
Moves under life's tempestuous throesL
As move the waters deep of oceanN
Far 'neath the ship when the tempest blowsL
-
The cloud rack streams across the skyD
The breaking billows threaten highD
These are Time's shadows on the voyageA
And bring the infinite Presence nighD
-
All sunlit seas in joyous danceL
Might show life but as happy chanceL
Nor hint of One who saves divinelyS
My faith is linked with deliveranceL
-
-
-
Two lives made one the man and wifeP2
A mystic thing to world of strifeP2
Serenity of oneness wholenessL
Repose of love as the law of lifeP2
-
Uncaught by skill of painter's artS
There glows a radiance of the heartS
In which the naked truth as sculptureI2
Is seen in colorless calm apartS
-
A luminous calm of spiritual lightS
Dissolving drop serene of sightS
Oft gathering o'er the eye of reasonN
And robing day in the folds of nightS
-
-
-
The mirrored silence of this poolI2
Reveals a world of noiseless ruleI2
It soothes and rests my fevered spiritS
A bath of balm of the deeps and coolI2
-
Still move the clouds still wheel the skiesL
The aspiring tree no longer sighsL
Fair thoughts of God full clothed in HeavenN
All calm and beautiful in Love's eyesL
-
Glassed in the light of Heaven's reposeL
He wears perfection like a roseL
Impatient heart be still Thou se stS
He brings His work to a perfect closeL
-
-
-
Over the brow of lofty scarI2
Quivers the light of evening starI2
And throws within the gorge's gloamingD
A kiss of beams on the brook afarI2
-
Quivers the stream with strange delightS
Through all the murmuring hours of nightS
And to the pale moss tells its storyS
And lichens fumbling far up the heightS
-
And in its dusk for aye the brookD
To cliffy covert caverned nookD
Brattles its sweet and starry secretS
Foregleam of day and an open lookD
-
-
-
Look now The crested waters sleepN2
White stars their emerald twilight keepN2
Above the tryst of pensile gloriesL
That kiss to purple and gold the deepN2
-
Blossoms the rose red as its nameM2
The trees aspire to heaven like flameM2
Articulate the gold eyed songstersL
While angels lean from their place of fameM2
-
O sleep sleep now sleep silverlyI2
Radiant divine deep bosomed seaL
Thy cradle rocks to skyey breathingsL
Bright fall Love's shadows on you and meL
-
-
-
How swift soft feathered Time sails onN
Its skyward flight nor stays to conN
The gulfs of space it wingeth overI2
Mere pools that hint of a shoreless yonN
-
Sunsets and dawns mirage the seaL
Foreshadow Nature's fixed decreeL
While steady rolls the round of seasonsL
The soul foreknows its eternityL
-
From spiritual heights beyond the spheresL
My ear elusive music hearsL
In stressful hours it falls and hoversL
And life is lift to AEonian yearsL
-
-
-
My quickened sense can only plodS
Imagination waves its rodS
My spirit burns with lightning splendorI2
Emotive faith tastes the bread of GodS
-
As moves the wind on sightless wingsL
Nor shadow o'er the landscape flingsL
While seas to chafe of foam are beatenN
And plectrum sweeps all the forest stringsL
-
So through the world doth Spirit moveB2
And presence by His working proveB2
A mystery of might and musicD
A lonelihood of eternal loveC2
-
-
-
What Nature mirrors and revealsL
The purblind vision it unsealsL
To sight of awesome Presence holyL
That chastens sore ere He soothes and healsL
-
The reign of law with ethic ruleI2
E'en in the breast of idle foolI2
As moon and stars are heavenly picturedS
Within the breast of a noisome poolI2
-
Herein is claim of Nature's worthL
Though I forget the forms of earthL
Of gilded cloud and circling planetS
I know His fire lives within their girthL
-
-
-
Green tracery of fern to rustS
The shouldering hills to level dustS
This is the law of rhythmic natureI2
The ebb and flow of its may and mustS
-
I hear the wind harp's wilding tonesL
Sobbing a requiem o'er their bonesL
The golden glob d skies shall perishM
The harper harps as he wails and moansL
-
Wild heart within thy ruby vaultS
Is flashed a purpose free of faultS
From great High Priest's own breast plate splendidS
E'en deathless life out of death's assaultS
-
-
-
What though the sea shell cheats the earI2
And from my blood free coursing nearI2
Unspheres the far and murmurous phantomM2
Of breaking seas that I faintly hearI2
-
Of life beyond there come to meL
Hints truer than shell's phantom seaL
I brood all space the past the presentS
And timeless realms of eternityL
-
The rose lipt thing has lost its pearlI2
Death's chamber is its polished whorlI2
I am a life and feel of BeingD
No phantom touch but the vital swirlI2
-
-
-
Says one who with the sad condolesL
No delicate delight unrollsL
But soon o'er it is flung a shadowS
O feeblest folly of shallow soulsL
-
A foolishness all overwornN
Yet deadly as the frost of scornN
The serious mind is born of sorrowS
On Love's brow rested a crown of thornN
-
The shadowland is rift with brightS
It did the deed of deeds inciteS
The Son of Man Jehovah's ServantS
Through shadows passed to His crown of lightS
-
-
-
There ever wakes an evil wraithL
To test the courage of my faithL
As life's dark passages are thriddedS
Alone Alone are the words it saithL
-
Ah no the wraith's an angel oneN
Whose face is always to the sunN
A guardian of the heart's temptationsL
That saves by fear ere the course be runN
-
'Tis Father love each round of dayS
That shadows in a twilight greyS
Or with Love's raven pinion coversL
To tempt His child from itself awayS
-
-
-
Far up the brook beyond the linN
I hear the impatient bluejay's dinN
While in the browning beech nut ladenN
The chipmunk gathers his harvest inN
-
Of all earth's trees exceeding fairI2
Thee have I loved beyond compareI2
Most human beech and felt thy spiritS
Tremble to mine in the dusky airI2
-
The year is rounding up its taskD
And kingly gives to all that askD
Ay soon 'twill move in pomp so royalI2
The world shall seem but a heavenly maskD
-
-
-
The full ripe year these maple hillsL
The pure October weather fillsL
Earth's veins so full of glowing crimsonN
That every leaf is ablush and thrillsL
-
An expectation holds the daysL
And angel sunbeams throng the waysL
The luminous skies grow close and tenderI2
And over all is a brooding hazeL
-
'Tis summer's apotheosisL
In flame of color burning kissL
As dew dies in the arms of sunlightS
A world of beauty dissolved in blissL
-
-
-
I dreamed I drew my parting breathL
And fell in sinking swoon of deathL
To gulfs of utter night all chillyL
While woven hands held me close beneathL
-
And then as thousand lights on shoreI2
The radiant forms I'd known beforeI2
And growing sound of kindly voicesL
And flood of light through an open doorI2
-
And lo at stern and prow there standsL
Close veiled an angel winged the sandsL
Beneath the shallop's keel wake musicD
Folded am I by the pierc d handsL
-
-
-
The world's a train at speeding rateS
An iron track its wheels awaitS
We're all on board beyond is darknessL
For God is only a name for FateS
-
Thus mouths and blasphemes round aboutS
An age in bondage to its doubtS
Pray says the soul and God and Christ andS
Freedom affirm with a ringing shoutS
-
Believe in God believe in MeL
Is freedom's voice like sounding seaL
Its grand AMEN from Him that livethL
And holds of this and all worlds the keyL
-
-
-
Hope's clear blue eye is open wideS
And hath fair visions that abideS
The white light of imaginationN
Glows on her brows as a heavenly brideS
-
Her face is lift to veil d thingsL
To which she mounts as if with wingsL
The tents of night the sable futureI2
Are light as day with the song she singsL
-
As lithe as breadths of silvery ryeD
When wrestling winds its footing tryD
The spirit that with hope is gleamingD
It must look up to the bending skyD
-
-
-
I see that power is not in artS
Nor name nor place essential partS
Of life's reality and gloryL
The strength of life is the health of heartS
-
If man but lived the pure white truthL
As lives the lily tender ruthL
The earth were Paradise to morrowS
The Christ unveiled would be here in soothL
-
The worldly wise he does not heedS
What love sees true is true indeedS
Immortal blooms this hardy blossomM2
And deathless fruits in a deathless creedS
-
-
-
Unveiled as kinsman Love did seekD
His wandering brethren Jew and GreekD
That God made man in His own imageA
Did human life of our God fore speakD
-
Nor mask nor vesture was His mienN
By man and angels wistly seenN
Nor filmy veil nor apparitionN
God's human life as the NazareneN
-
A man the Christ of God earth trodS
And showed to man and worlds abroadS
The holy good and sorrowing FatherI2
Atoning love and the heart of GodS
-
-
-
O glorious light Thy limpid waveQ2
Doth floor of living being paveQ2
And life from out the caves of darknessL
Waft to His sheltering architraveQ2
-
From void of night's lone pall of jetS
Yellow and red and violetS
Into a quivering beam were wovenN
His flying looms are aweaving yetS
-
If man and beast and tree and flowerI2
Unweave not Love's rich beauteous dowerI2
All Dana again earth darklesL
Beneath His ceaseless and golden showerI2
-
-
-
Hail Mary honored of the raceL
Light of the Home its fount of graceL
Is woman sister wife and motherI2
Circling a towered and a heavenly placeL
-
She sorrowed oft for Love's dear sakeD
She did the alabaster breakD
Like Him she knows of pain and anguishM
And doth for life of death's cup partakeD
-
Hope of the race since from Home's throneN
Sweet Love's own gift and His aloneN
She giveth laws to coming agesL
Builder from cope to foundation stoneN
-
-
-
Frail Lucia of a mutual loveC2
Fair little wing d cooing doveC2
Thou'st fluttered down from thy far dovecoteS
Awhile to nestle in earth's sweet groveK2
-
Would it were sweeter child for theeL
Sweet as the silver breaking seaL
When Indian summer broods upon itS
Doth flute and fife to the golden treeL
-
Thine angel listens for thy breathL
Whene'er he hears the wings of deathL
Looks in the Father's face and prayethL
For earth's sake spare her he softly saithL
-
-
-
O patriot ruler leader greatS
Master of labor builder of stateS
Man of the mart and king of commerceL
His lips have spoken why longer waitS
-
One brotherhood one familyL
And love its great economyL
The law of might is rule of evilI2
The ethic lives in man's spirit freeL
-
No borrowed laws of clay nor bruteS
Can e'er the freeman's spirit suitS
He gave him choice Hark how he thundersL
Through human strife nor is deaf nor muteS
-
-
-
The sword and spear and savage knifeP2
Wherewith the world is dowered of strifeP2
Are but as flotsam on the currentS
Of purpose vast of the Lord of LifeP2
-
His rising winds and swelling surgeA
And underflowing tidal urgeA
Shall grind to dust these lethal spiritsL
And chant in triumph their sounding dirgeA
-
Break way break way Fell Evil ceaseL
O soldiers of the King's increaseL
O happy homes O happy peoplesL
O bless d wings of the ships of peaceL
-
-
-
Love's inspirations of the lyreI2
Upsway the heart's intense desireI2
And rulership and kingdoms nobleI2
Are seen within the revealing fireI2
-
The frost of selfish blood gives placeL
To breath of life and salt of graceL
New armor takes the cloistered spiritS
And man becomes of a higher raceL
-
Hark 'Tis an angel's throbbing wingD
His messenger the age to bringD
When crown of brotherhood upon himM2
Each man shall be to his neighbor kingD
-
-
-
Like oxeye daisies of the fieldS
The stars their countless numbers yieldS
In this pure sky of depth unfathomedS
Wherein they lay and so deep concealedS
-
Gardens of light environed fairI2
With tremulous bloom of azure whereI2
All sweet star buds unroll their gloriesL
In silent dews of etherial airI2
-
O Tiller of the fields of heavenN
Gardener of space by day and evenN
The circling earth a once fair gardenN
Lifts up its face for Thy promise givenN
-
-
-
The sovereign law of human lifeP2
That Love ordained for man and wifeP2
For homes whence stream the generationsL
To joyous service and not to strifeP2
-
This law gives rest and labor fitS
God's air on surface and in pitS
Wealth for the soul and mind and bodyS
And fellowship with the race close knitS
-
O golden year when law and lifeP2
Incorporate are as man and wifeP2
And wing d hosts of light are sayingD
Peace and goodwill on the earth are rifeP2
-
-
-
Break into flower O garden fairI2
Long hast thou known the Gardener's careI2
The rain and dew from heaven have fallenN
And sunbeams warm on thy bosom bareI2
-
The grains of seed all viewless fellI2
Within the mellow soil to dwellI2
Silent the fall as that of pebblesL
Cast in oblivion's sunless wellI2
-
List music ether fine up goesL
From swelling seed and life's keen throesL
O Earth thy riven breast shall blossomM2
In Heaven's own beauty e'en as the roseL
-
-
-
Immortal Love immortal ruthL
Thorn crowned and crowned with deathless youthL
Source of pure faith and of right reasonN
Thou art Authority and the TruthL
-
Blest Bond of Being why and whenceL
In realm of thought in realm of senseL
In world of human life and actionN
True Centre Thou and CircumferenceL
-
The sun and moon from spacious heightS
And stars may crumble into nightS
Ongoing Lord Eternal OrderI2
And Fount of Beauty and Love and LightS
