-
A death like dew was fallingB
On the herbs and the grassy groundC
The stars to their bournes prest forwardD
Night cloaked the hills aroundC
-
He thought of a night long pastE
Of the ladder that reached to heavenF
The Face that shone above itG
The pillar his pillows of evenH

-
From out of the sleeve of the darknessI
Was thrust an arm of strengthJ
Long he wrestled for masteryK
But begged for blessing at lengthJ
-
White fear fell on him at dawnL
As the Nameless spake with him thenM
Prevailer and Prince called He himN
A power with God and with menM
-
And alone the lame wrestler musedO
The Face of God is this placeP
Ah me and my life is preservedQ
Yet God have I seen face to faceP
-
-
IIIA
-
Life's darkness is background for GodR
For unsleeping Love's high commandS
And the shadowy heap of each lifeT
Is revealed at the touch of His handS
-
And the arm of Love doth wrestleU
All night by the fords we crossV
To shrivel our sinews of selfW
And give His blessing for lossV
-
Night shows the houses of heavenF
O pilgrim for life's journey shodR
And from out the sleeve of darknessI
Is thrust the arm of GodR
