Widow Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDE FGHHG IJBKK LMNOP QJJJP ORSTR UVTWX YJZA2B2

Widow The word consumes itselfA
Body a sheet of newsprint on the fireB
Levitating a numb minute in the updraftC
Over the scalding red topographyD
That will put her heart out like an only eyeE
-
Widow The dead syllable with its shadowF
Of an echo exposes the panel in the wallG
Behind which the secret passages lies stale airH
Fusty remembrances the coiled spring stairH
That opens at the top onto nothing at allG
-
Widow The bitter spider sitsI
And sits in the center of her loveless spokesJ
Death is the dress she wears her hat and collarB
The moth face of her husband moonwhite and illK
Circles her like a prey she'd love to killK
-
A second time to have him near againL
A paper image to lay against her heartM
The way she laid his letters till they grew warmN
And seemed to give her warmth like a live skinO
But it is she who is paper now warmed by no oneP
-
Widow that great vacant estateQ
The voice of God is full of draftinessJ
Promising simply the hard stars the spaceJ
Of immortal blankness between starsJ
And no bodies singing like arrows up to heavenP
-
Widow the compassionate trees bend inO
The trees of loneliness the trees of mourningR
They stand like shadows about the green landscapeS
Or even like black holes cut out of itT
A widow resembles them a shadow thingR
-
Hand folding hand and nothing in betweenU
A bodiless soul could pass another soulV
In this clear air and never notice itT
One soul pass through the other frail as smokeW
And utterly ignorant of the way it tookX
-
That is the fear she has the fearY
His soul may beat and be beating at her dull senseJ
Like Blue Mary's angel dovelike against a paneZ
Blinded to all but the grey spiritless roomA2
It looks in on and must go on looking in onB2
