'Perspective betrays with its dichotomyA
train tracks always meet not here but onlyA
in the impossible mind's eyeB
horizons beat a retreat as we embarkC
on sophist seas to overtake that markC
where wave pretends to drench real sky 'D
-
'Well then if we agree it is not oddE
that one man's devil is another's godE
or that the solar spectrum isF
a multitude of shaded grays suspenseG
on the quicksands of ambivalenceH
is our life's whole nemesisI
-
So we could rave on darling you and IB
until the stars tick out a lullabyB
about each cosmic pro and conJ
nothing changes for all the blazing ofK
our drastic jargon but clock hands that moveL
implacably from twelve to oneM
-
We raise our arguments like sitting ducksN
to knock them down with logic or with luckO
and contradict ourselves for funM
the waitress holds our coats and we put onJ
the raw wind like a scarf love is a faunJ
who insists his playmates runJ
-
Now you my intellectual leprechaunJ
would have me swallow the entire sunJ
like an enormous oyster downJ
the ocean in one gulp you say a markC
of comet hara kiri through the darkC
should inflame the sleeping townJ
-
So kiss the drunks upon the curb and damesP
in dubious doorways forget their monday namesP
caper with candles in their headsQ
the leaves applaud and santa claus flies inJ
scattering candy from a zeppelinJ
playing his prodigal charadesR
-
The moon leans down to took the tilting fishS
in the rare river wink and laugh we lavishS
blessings right and left and cryB
hello and then hello again in deafT
churchyard ears until the starlit stiffU
graves all carol in replyB
-
Now kiss again till our strict father leansV
to call for curtain on our thousand scenesV
brazen actors mock at himW
multiply pink harlequins and singX
in gay ventriloquy from wing to wingX
while footlights flare and houselights dimW
-
Tell now we taunt where black or white beginsY
and separate the flutes from violinsY
the algebra of absolutesZ
explodes in a kaleidoscope of shapesA2
that jar while each polemic jackanapesA2
joins his enemies' recruitsA2
-
The paradox is that 'the play's the thing'X
though prima donna pouts and critic stingsA2
there burns throughout the line of wordsA2
the cultivated act a fierce brief fusionJ
which dreamers call real and realists illusionJ
an insight like the flight of birdsA2
-
Arrows that lacerate the sky while knowingX
the secret of their ecstasy's in goingX
some day moving one will dropB2
and dropping die to trace a wound that healsA2
only to reopen as flesh congealsA2
cycling phoenix never stopsA2
-
So we shall walk barefoot on walnut shellsA2
of withered worlds and stamp out puny hellsA2
and heavens till the spirits squeakX
surrender to build our bed as high as jack'sA2
bold beanstalk lie and love till sharp scythe hacksA2
away our rationed days and weeksA2
-
Then jet the blue tent topple stars rain downJ
and god or void appall us till we drownJ
in our own tears today we startC2
to pay the piper with each breath yet loveK
knows not of death nor calculus aboveK
the simple sum of heart plus heartC2
