SNOWY SMOOTH beneath the penA
Richest field that iron ploughsB
Germinating thoughts of menA
Tho no heaven its rain allowsB
-
There they ripen thousand foldC
And our spirits reap the cornD
In a day long dream of goldC
Food for all the souls unbornD
-
Like the murmur of the earthE
When we listen stooping lowF
Like sap singing nature s mirthE
Foaming up the trees that growF
-
Evermore a subtle songG
Sings the pen unto it whileH
Fluid idea flows alongG
Each new Era s mother NileH
-
Greater than ensphering SeaI
For it holds the sea and landJ
Seed of every deed to beI
Down its current borne like sandJ
-
I caress thy surface sheerK
Holding thee the AbsoluteL
Where the things to be inhereK
Waiting their material bruitL
-
How I love thee my heart s bloodL
Were too dull to smutch thy whiteL
I ll aver no lily s budL
Lays such unction on my sightL
-
Suave of maiden s throat or armM
Bliss embodied to the touchN
Has not such ambrosial charmM
Not a marble Goddess suchN
-
Dear White Paper All To dayL
Palpitates with spirit heatL
Only on thy whiteness mayL
Seers translate its rhythms sweetL
-
Holy Paper all the PastL
Were a rack of ruined cloudL
Stripping from our orbit vastL
But thou Eternity endowedL
-
With an actual soul of speechO
Life of life by death distilledL
That all dateless days shall reachO
As life s vine of veins is filledL
-
O the glorious Heavens wroughtL
By Cadmean souls of yoreK
From pure element of ThoughtL
And thy leaves their silvern doorK
-
Light they open and we standL
Past the sovereignty of FateL
Glad among Them still and grandL
The Creators and CreateL
