A Ballad Of The Last King Of Thule Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD AEAE ECFC EECE CGCG HIHI EEHE JIJI ABAB

There was a King of ThuleA
Whom a Witch wife stole at birthB
In a country known but newlyA
All under the dumb huge EarthB
-
That King's in a Forest toilingC
And he never the green sward delvesD
But he sees all his green waves boilingC
Over his sands and shelvesD
-
In these sunsets vast and fieryA
In these dawns divine he seesE
Hy Brasil Mannan and EireA
And the Isle of AppletreesE
-
He watches heart still and breathlessE
The clouds through the deep day trailingC
As the white winged vessels gatheredF
Into his harbours sailingC
-
Ranked Ibis and lazy EaglesE
In the great blue flame may riseE
But ne'er Sea mew or Solan beatingC
Up through their grey low skiesE
-
When the storm led fires are breakingC
Great waves of the molten nightG
Deep in his eyes comes achingC
The icy Boreal LightG
-
O lost King and O people perishedH
Your Thule has grown one graveI
Unvisited as uncherishedH
Save by the wandering waveI
-
The billows burst in his doorwaysE
The spray swoops over his wallsE
O his banners that throb dishonouredH
O'er arms that hide in his hallsE
-
Deserved is your desolationJ
Why could you not stir and saveI
The last born heir of your nationJ
Sold into the South a slaveI
-
Till he dies and is buried dulyA
In the hot Australian earthB
The lorn lost King of ThuleA
Whom a Witch wife stole at birthB
