Rhyme Scheme: ABCAABCADCACCCOh teeming heart that for this once in vain | A |
Big with our good didst undeliver'd die | B |
Had some god got thee with a progeny | C |
O'er great that born might even dispute the reign | A |
Of Death as Death had seen the realms of Pain | A |
Won by thine elder brood We marvell'd why | B |
So seeming careless of his sovereignty | C |
He spared and spared thee doth this day explain | A |
The Fabian greed that grudged a needless blow | D |
Knowing too well what deity possest | C |
Thee did the dead eyed strategist foreknow | A |
How the huge god must choke the mortal breast | C |
The mortal breast deep under clod and sod | C |
Out of the half saved world drag down the abortive god | C |
