Lord Jesus as a little childA
Upon some high ascension dayB
When a great people goes to payB
Allegiance and the tumult wildA
-
-
Roars by its thousand streets and fillsC
The billowy nation on the plainD
As roar into the heaving mainD
A thousand torrents from the hillsC
-
-
Caught in the current of the throngE
Is drawn beneath the closing crowdF
And drowning in the human floodG
Is whirled in its dark depths alongE
-
-
And low under the ruthless feetH
Or high as to the awful kneesI
Of giants that he partly seesI
Blinded with fear and faint with heatH
-
-
Mindless of all but what doth seemJ
And shut out from the upper lightK
Maddens within a monstrous nightK
Of limbs that crush him like a dreamJ
-
-
And when his strength no more can standL
And while he sinks in his last swoundL
Is lifted from the deadly groundL
And led by a resistless handL
-
-
And thro' the opening agonyM
Goes on and knows not where besideL
The mastery of his guardian guideL
Goes on and knows not where nor whyN
-
-
Till when the sky no more is hidL
Between the rocking heads he seesI
A mount that rises by degreesI
Above them like a pyramidL
-
-
And on the summit of the mountL
A vacant throne and round the throneO
Bright vestured princes zone by zoneO
In circles that he cannot countL
-
-
And feels at length a slanting wayB
And labours by his guardian goodL
Till forth as from a lessening woodL
They step into the dazzling dayB
-
-
And from the mount he sees belowP
The maivel of the marshalled plainD
And what was tumult is a reignD
And as he climbs the princes knowP
-
-
His guide and fall about his feetL
Before his face the courtiers fallQ
And lo it is the Lord of allQ
And on his throne he takes his seatL
-
-
And while strong fears transfix the boyR
The mighty people far and nearS
Throw up upon the eye and earT
The flash and thunder of their joyR
-
-
And round the royal flag unfurledL
In sequent love and circling aweU
The legions lead their living lawV
And what was Chaos is a WorldL
-
-
So Lord Thou seest this mortal meM
Deep in Titanic days that pressW
Incessant from unknown accessW
To issues that I cannot seeM
-
-
Caught in the current stern and strongE
I sink beneath the closing crowdL
And drowning in the awful floodL
Am whirled in its dark depths alongE
-
-
Struggling with shows so thronged and thrustL
On these wide eyes which bruise and burnX
And flash with half seen sights or turnX
To that worse darkness thick with dustL
-
-
That mindful of but what doth seemJ
And hopeless of the upper lightL
I madden in a monstrous nightL
Of shapes that crush me like a dreamJ
-
-
Then when my strength no more can standL
And while I sink in my last swoundL
Lo I am lifted from the groundL
And led by a resistless handL
-
-
And thro' the opening agonyM
Go on and know not where besideL
The mastery of my guardian guideL
Go on and know not where or whyN
-
-
Nor tho' I cannot see Thy browY
Distrust the hand I feel so dearS
Nor question how Thou wert so nearS
Nor ask Thee whither goest ThouY
-
-
Nor whence Thy footsteps first beganZ
Whence Lord Thou knowest whither LordL
Thou knowest how Thou knowest Oh WordL
That can be touched oh Spoken ManZ
-
-
Enough enough if Thou wilt leadL
To know Thou knowest enough to knowP
That darkling at Thy side I goP
And this strong hand is Thine indeedL
-
-
Yet by that side unspent untrodL
Oh let me clinging still to TheeM
Between the swaying wonders seeM
The throne upon the mount of GodL
-
-
And tho' they close before mine eyeN
And all my course is choked and shutL
Feel Time grow steeper under footL
And know the final height is nighN
-
-
And as one sees thro' cambered straitsA2
Of forests on his forward wayB
Horizons green of coloured dayB
Oh let me thro' the crowding FatesA2
-
-
Behold the light of skies unseenB2
Till on that sudden CapitolC2
I step forth to the sight of allQ
That is and shall be and hath beenD2
-
-
And Thou O King shalt take Thine ownO
Triumphant and Thy place fulfilledL
The flaw of Nature shall be healedL
And joyous round Thy central throneO
-
-
I see the vocal ages rollE2
And all the human universeF2
Like some great symphony rehearseF2
The order of its perfect wholeE2
-
-
And seek in vain where once I fellG2
Nor know the anarchy I knewH2
In those congenial motions dueH2
Of this great work where all is wellG2
-
-
And smile with dazzled wisdom dumbI2
Remembering all I said and sungJ2
That man asks more of mortal tongueJ2
Than skill to say 'Thy kingdom come '-
