'Oh dark eyed maid 'A
The soldier saidB
'I've been wounded in many a frayC
But such a dartD
As you shoot to my heartD
I never felt till to dayC
-
-
Then give to meE
Kisses one two threeE
All for dear Charity's sakeF
And pity my painG
And meet me againH
Or else my heart must break '-
-
-
Peggy was kindI
She would save the blindI
Black fly that shimmered the aleJ
And her quick hand stoppedK
If a grass moth droppedK
In the drifted snows of the pailJ
-
-
One two threeE
Kisses gave sheE
All for dear Charity's sakeF
And she pitied his painG
And she met him againH
For fear his heart should breakF
-
-
The bugle blewL
The merry flag flewL
The squadron clattered the townM
The twigs were bright on the minster elmN
He wore a primrose in his helmN
As they clattered thro' the townM
Heydey holiday on we goO
Heydey holiday blow boys blowO
Clattering thro' the townM
-
-
And when the minster leaves were searP
On a far red field by a dark sea drearP
In dust and thunder and cheer boys cheerP
The bold dragoon went downM
-
-
Shiver poor Peggy the wind blows highQ
Beg a penny as I go byQ
All for sweet Charity's sakeF
Hold the thin hand from the shawlR
Turn the wan face to the wallR
Turn the face let the hot tears fallR
For fear your heart should breakF
