Can I see thee standA
On the looming landA
Dost thou wave with thy white handA
Farewell farewellB
I could think that thou art nearC
Thy sweet voice is in mine earD
Farewell farewellB
While I listen all things seemE
Singing in a singing dreamE
Farewell farewellB
Echoing in an echoing dreamE
Farewell farewellB
-
-
Yon boat upon the seaF
It floats 'twixt thee and meF
I see the boatman listless lieG
He cannot hear the cryG
That in mine ears doth ringH
Farewell farewellB
Doth it pass him o'er and o'erI
Heard upon the shore behindJ
Farewell farewellB
Heard upon the ship beforeK
Farewell farewellB
Like an arrow that can dartL
Viewless thro' the viewless windJ
Plain on the quivering stringH
And plain in the victim's heartL
-
-
Are there voices in the skyG
Farewell farewellB
Am I mocked by the bright airM
Farewell farewellB
The empty air that everywhereM
Silvers back the sung replyG
Farewell farewellB
While to and fro the tremulous accents flyG
Farewell farewellB
Now shown now shyG
Farewell farewellB
Now song now sighG
Farewell farewellB
Toy with the grasping heart that deems them nighG
Come like blown bells in sudden wind and highG
Or far on furthest verge in lingering echoes dieG
Farewell farewellB
Farewell farewell farewellB
-
-
Oh Love what strange dumb FateN
Hath broken into voice to see us hopeO
Surely we part to meet againP
Like one struck blind I gropeO
In vain in vainQ
I cannot hold a single sense to tellB
The meaning of this melancholy bellB
Farewell farewellB
I touch them with my thought and small and greatN
They join the swaying swellB
Farewell farewellB
Farewell farewell farewellB
-
-
Aye when I felt thee fallingH
On this heaving breastR
Aye when I felt thee prestR
Nearer nearer nearerI
Dearer dearer dearerI
Aye while I saw thy faceS
In that long last embraceS
The first the last the bestR
Aye while I held thee heart to heartL
My soul had pushed off from the shoreK
And we were far apartL
I heard her calling callingH
From the sea of nevermoreK
Farewell farewellB
Fainter fainter like a bellB
Rung from some receding shipT
Farewell farewellB
The far and further knellB
Did hardly reach my lipT
Farewell farewellB
Farewell farewell farewellB
-
-
Away you omens vainQ
Away awayU
What will you not be drivenV
My heart is trembling to your auguryK
Hence Like a flight of seabirds at a gunV
A thousand ways they scatter back to HeavenV
Wheel lessening out of sight and swoop again as oneV
Farewell farewellB
Farewell farewell farewellB
-
-
Oh Love what fatal spellB
Is winding winding round me to this singingH
What hands unseen are flingingH
The tightening mesh that I can feel too wellB
What viewless wings are wingingH
The siren music of this passing bellB
Farewell farewellB
Farewell farewell farewellB
-
-
Arouse my heart arouseW
This is the sea I strike these wooden wallsX
The sailors come and go at my commandA
I lift this cable with my handA
I loose it and it fallsX
Arouse she is not lostY
Thou art not plighted to a moonlight ghostZ
But to a living spouseA2
Arouse we only part to meet againP
Oh thou moody mainQ
Are thy mermaid cells a ringingH
Are thy mermaid sisters singingH
The saddest shell of every cellB
Ringing still and ringingH
Farewell farewellB
To the sinking sighing singingH
To the floating flying singingH
To the deepening dying singingH
In the swellB
Farewell farewellB
And the failing wailing ringingH
The reaming dreaming ringingH
Of fainter shell in deeper cellB
To the sunken sunken singingH
Farewell farewellB
Farewell farewellB
Farewell farewell farewellB
