Rain rain sweet warm rainA
On the wood and on the plainA
Rain rain warm and sweetB
Summer wood lush leafy and loudC
With note of a throat that ripples and ringsD
Sad sole sweet from her central seatB
Bubbling and trillingE
Filling filling fillingE
The shady space of the green dim placeF
With an odour of melodyG
Till all the noon is thrillingE
And the great wood hangs in the balmy dayH
Like a cloud with an angel in the cloudC
And singing because she singsD
-
-
In the sheltering woodI
At that hour I stoodI
I saw that in that hourJ
Great round drops clear round dropsK
Grew on every leaf and flowerJ
And its hue so fairly tookL
And faintly that each tinted elfM
Trembled with a rarer selfM
Even as if its beauty shookL
With passion to a tenderer lookL

Then out of the sweet warm weatherJ
There came a little wind sighing sighingE
Came to the wood sighing and sighing went inN
Sighed thro' the green grass and o'er the leaves brownO
Sighed to the dingle and sighing lay downO
While all the flowers whispered togetherJ
Then came swift winds after her who was flyingE
Swift bright winds with a jocund dinN
Sought her in vain her boscage was so goodI
And spread like baffled revellers thro' the woodI
Then from bough and leaf and bellP
The great round drops the clear round dropsK
In fitful cadence drooped and fellP
Drooped and fell as if some wanton airQ
Were more apparent here and thereQ
Sphered on a favourite flower in dewy kissR
Grew heavy with delight and dropped with blissR

Rain rain sweet warm rainA
On the wood and on the plainA
Rain rain still and sweetB
For the winds have hushed againS
And the nightingale is stillT
Sleeping in her central seatB
Rain rain summer rainA
Silent as the summer heatB
Doth it fall or doth it riseU
Is it incense from the hillT
Or bounty from the skiesU
Or is the face of earth that liesU
Languid looking up on highV
To the face of Heaven so nighV
That their balmy breathings meetB
-
-
Rain rain summer rainA
On the wood and on the plainA
Rain rain rain untilT
The tall wet trees no more athirstB
As each chalice green doth fillT
See the pigmy nations nurstB
Round their distant feet and throwW
The nectar to the herbs belowW
The droughty herbs without a soundB
Drink it ere it reach the groundB
-
-
Rain rain sweet warm rainA
On the wood and on the plainA
And round me like a dropping wellP
The great round drops they fell and fellP
-
-
I say not War is good or illT
Perchance they may slay if they willT
Who killing love and loving killT
-
-
I do not join yon captive's dinN
Some man among us without sinN
Perhaps may rightly lock him inN
-
-
I do not grant the Tyrant's pleaG
The slaves potential to be freeG
Already are the Powers that beG
-
-
Whether our bloodsheds flow or ceaseX
I know that as the years increaseX
The flower of all is human peaceX
-
-
'The Flower ' Vertumnus hath reputeB
O'er Flora yet methinks the fruitB
But alter ego of the rootB
-
-
And that which serves our fleshly needB
Subserves the blossom that doth feedB
The soul which is the life indeedB
-
-
Nor well he deems who deems the roseY
Is for the roseberry nor knowsY
The roseberry is for the roseY
-
-
And Autumn's garnered treasuryG
But prudent Nature's guaranteeG
That Summer evermore shall beG
-
-
And yearly once a year completeB
That top and culmen exquisiteB
Whereto the slanting seasons meetB
-
-
Whether our bloodsheds flow or ceaseX
I know that as the years increaseX
The flower of all is human peaceX
-
-
'The flower ' Yet whether shall we sowZ
A blossom or a seed I knowW
The flower will rot the seed will growW

By this the rain had ceased and I went forthA2
From that Dodona green of oak and beechB2
But ere my steps could reachB2
The hamlet I beheld along the vergeC2
A flight of fleeing cloudlets that did urgeC2
Unequal speed as when a herd is drivenD2
By the recurring pulse of shoutings loudB
I saw but held the omen of no worthE2
For by the footway not a darnel stirredB
And still the noon slept on nor even a birdB
Moved the dull air but at each silent handB
Upon the steaming landB
The hare lay basking and the budded wheatB
Hung slumberous heads of sleepF2
Then I was 'ware that a great northern cloudB
Moved slowly to the centre of the heavenD2
His white head was so highV
That the great blue fell round him like the wideB
And ermined robe of kings He sat in prideB
Lonely and cold but methought when he spiedB
From that severe inhospitable heightB
The distant dear delightB
The meiting world with summer at her sideB
His pale brow mellowed with a mournful lightB
And like a marble god he wept his stony tearsG2
The loyal clouds that sit about his feetB
All in their courtier kindsH2
Do weep to see him weepF2
After the priceless drops the sycophant windsI2
Leap headlong down and chase and swirl and sweepF2
Beneath the royal grief that scarce may reach the groundB
To see their whirling zealJ2
Unlikely things that in the kennel lieV
Begin to wheel and wheelJ2
The wild tarantula will spreads far and nighV
And spinning straws go spiral to the skyV
And leaves long dead leap up and dance their ghastly roundB
And so it happened in the streetB
'Neath a broad eave I stood and mused againS
And all the arrows of the driving rainA
Were tipped with slanting sleetB
I mused beneath the straw pent of the brickedB
And sodded cot with damp moss mouldered o'erJ
The bristled thatch gleamed with a carcanetB
And from the inner eaves the reeking wetB
Dripped dropping moreK2
And more as more the sappy roof was sappedB
And wept a mirkier wash that splashed and clappedB
The plain stones dribbling to the flooded doorK2
A plopping pool of droppings stood beforeK2
Worn by a weeping age in rock of easy grainA
O'erhead hard by a pointed beam o'erlappedB
And from its jewelled tipL2
The slipping slipping dripL2
Did whip the fillipped pool whose hopping plashes tickedB
-
-
Let one or thousands loose or bindB
That land's enslaved whose sovran mindB
Collides the conscience of mankindB
-
-
And free whoever holds the roodB
Where Might in Right and Power in GoodB
Flow each in each like life in bloodB
-
-
The age has broken from his kingsD
Stop him Behold his feet have wingsD
Upon his back the hero springsD
-
-
Tho' Jack's horse run away with JackM2
Who knows while Jack keeps on his backM2
If Jack rule him or he rule JackM2

Cuckoo takes the mud awayH
True the sun doth shine all dayH
Cuckoo takes the mud awayH

Who sneers at heirloom rank God knowsY
Each man that lives each flower that blowsY
There may be lords and a blue roseY
-
-
Even to the sod whereon you prateH
This land is ours Do you debateH
How we shall manage our estateH
-
-
Norman War granted you your leaseX
The very countersign of PeaceX
Shows the first Lessor can releaseX
-
-
Therefore altho' you cannot guideH
Be wise and spare the almighty prideH
Of that mild monster that you rideH
-
-
If England's head and heart were oneD2
Where is that good beneath the sunD2
Her noble hands should leave undoneD2
-
-
Small unit hast thou hardinessX
To bid mankind to battle YesX
The worm will rout them and is lessX
-
-
The world assaults Nor fight nor flyV
Stand in some steadfast truth and eyeV
The stubborn siege grow old and dieV
-
-
My army is manking My foeW
The very meanest truth I knowW
Shall I come back a conqueror NoW
-
-
Wouldst light See Phosphor shines confestV
Turn thy broad back upon the westV
