YOUTHA
-
Pilgrim of life thy hoary headB
Is bent with age thine eyeC
Looks downward to the silent deadB
Wreck of mortalityD
The friends who flourished in thy dayE
Have sought their narrow homeF
Their spirits whisper Come awayE

My soul replies I comeH
I tread the path I trod a childI
The fields I loved of yoreJ
The flowers that 'neath my footsteps smiledI
Now meet my gaze no moreJ
I stand beneath this giant oakK
It was an aged treeD
Hollowed by time's resistless strokeK
When life was green with meD
Its lofty head it proudly rearsL
To greet the summer skyC
Whilst bending with the weight of yearsL
I feebly totter byC
And hushed are all the thousand songsM
That filled these branches highC
Echo no more for me prolongsM
The woodland minstrelsyM
Silence has gathered round life's hallN
My friends are in the clayE
I hear no more the footsteps fallN
That cheered my early dayE
I see no more the faces dearO
Which shone around my hearthP
Bereft of all I sojourn hereQ
Still happy though on earthR

YOUTHA
-
And canst thou smile when all are goneS
Who shared thy youthful primeT
Content to wait and watch aloneU
To grapple still with timeT
How comes it that thou thus belowV
Hast rest above the sodW
Which brings to memory scenes of woeV

AGEG

It is the will of GodW
