WINTERA
-
Awake arise all my stormy powersB
The earth the fair earth again is oursB
At my stern approach pale Autumn flings downC
In the dust her broken and faded crownC
At my glance the terrified mourner fliesD
And the earth is filled with her doleful criesD
Awake for the season of flowers is o'erA
My white banner unfurl on each northern shoreE
Ye have slumbered long in my icy chainF
Ye are free to travel the land and mainF
Spirits of frost quit your mountains of snowG
Will ye longer suffer the streams to flowG
Up up and away from your rocky cavesH
And herald me over the pathless wavesH
-
He ceased and rose from his craggy throneI
And girt around him his icy zoneI
And his meteor eye grew wildly brightJ
As he threw his glance o'er those realms of nightJ
He sent forth his voice with a mighty soundK
And the snows of ages were scattered aroundK
And the hollow murmurs that shook the skyL
Told to the monarch his band was nighL
-
THE WIND FROSTM
-
I come o'er the hills of the frozen NorthN
To call to the battle thy armies forthN
I have swept the shores of the Baltic seaO
And the billows have felt my masteryO
They resisted my power but strove in vainF
I have curbed their might with my crystal chainF
I roused the northwind in his stormy caveP
Together we passed over land and waveP
I sharpened his breath and gave him powerA
To crush and destroy every herb and flowerA
He obeyed my voice and is rending nowQ
The sallow leaves from the groaning boughQ
And he shouts aloud in his wild disdainF
As he whirls them down to the frozen plainF
Those beautiful leaves to which Spring gave birthR
Are scattered abroad on the face of the earthR
I have visited many a creek and bayS
And curdled the streams in my stormy wayS
I have chilled into hail the genial showerA
All this I have done to increase thy powerA
-
-
THE RIME FROSTM
-
I stood by the stream in the deep midnightJ
The moon through the fog shed a misty lightJ
I arrested the vapours that floated byL
And wove them in garlands and hung them on highL
I bound the trees in a feathery zoneI
And turned the soft dews of heaven to stoneI
I spangled with gems every leaf and sprayS
As onward I passed on my noiseless wayS
And I came to thee when my work was doneT
To see how they shone in the morning sunT
-
-
THE NORTH WINDU
-
I have borne the clouds on my restless wingsV
And my sullen voice through the desert ringsV
I sent through the forest a rushing blastW
And the foliage fled as I onward passedW
From the desolate regions of woe and deathX
In adamant bound by my freezing breathX
From the crystal mountains where silence reignsY
And nature sleeps on the sterile plainsY
I have brought the snow from thy mighty storeE
To whiten and cover each northern shoreE
-
-
THE EAST WINDU
-
I woke like a giant refreshed with sleepZ
And lifted the waves of the troubled deepZ
I clouded the heavens with vapours darkA2
And rolled the tide o'er the foundering barkA2
Then mocked in hoarse murmurs the hollow cryL
Of the drowning wretch in his agonyO
I have leagued with the North to assert thy rightJ
On the land and the wave both by day and by nightJ
-
-
THE SNOWG
-
I heard thy summons and hastened fastW
And floated hither before the blastW
To wave thy white banner o'er tower and townC
O'er the level plain and the mountain brownC
I have crowned the woods with a spotless wreathB2
And loaded the avalanche with deathX
I have wrapped the earth in a winding sheetC2
And Nature lies dead beneath my feetC2
-
-
CHORUS OF SPIRITSD2
-
All hail mighty monarch our tasks are o'erA
Thy power is confessed on each northern shoreE
From the rock's stern brow to the rolling seaO
The spirits of earth have bowed to theeO
In the cradle of Nature the young Spring liesD
With the slumber of death on her azure eyesD
And we wander at will through the wide domainF
Which in beauty and verdure shall flourish againE2
When she bursts from her shroud like a sun beam forthN
'To chase us back to the frozen North '-
-
With darkness and storms for thy panoplyO
Stern Winter what power may contend with theeO
Thy sceptre commands both the wind and the tideF2
And thy empire extends over regions wideF2
With thy star gemmed crown and eagle wingsV
The strongest of nature's potent kingsV
But thy power for a season alone is lentG2
Thou art but a ministering spirit sentG2
By the mighty Creator of thine and theeO
Who fills with his presence immensityG2
