Dark spirit who through every ageA
Hast cast a baleful gloomB
Stern lord of strife and civil rageA
The dungeon and the tombB
What homage should men pay to theeC
Spirit of woe and anarchyC
-
Yet there are those who in thy trainD
Can feel a fierce delightE
Who rush exulting to the plainD
And triumph in the fightE
Where the red banner floats afarF
Along the crimson tide of warG
-
Who is the knight on sable steedH
That comes with thundering treadI
Dark warrior slack thy furious speedH
Nor trample on the deadI
A youthful chief before thee liesJ
Struggling in life's last agoniesK
-
Oh pause one moment in thy courseL
Those lineaments to traceM
Dost thou not feel a strange remorseL
Whilst gazing on that faceM
Where grace and manly beauty meetN
To die beneath thy courser's feetN
-
Those sunny tresses scattered wideO
And soiled with dust and bloodP
Were once a mother's fondest prideO
When at her knee he stoodQ
A rosy playful laughing boyR
Her lonely heart's sole hope and joyR
-
But youth a glowing vision broughtS
And whispered glory's nameT
Renown with every burning thoughtS
Linked to ambition cameT
Like a young war horse in his mightE
He panted for the desperate fightE
-
For civil discord rent the landU
His warrior sire afarF
Against his sovereign raised the brandU
The leader of the warG
By honour fired the stripling drawsV
His weapon in the royal causeW
-
Stretched bleeding on the battle fieldX
His first last strife is doneY
No more his hand the sword shall wieldX
His eyes behold the sunY
Or his pale lips repeat the cryZ
The thrilling shout of victoryC
-
He struggles yet the strife is o'erA2
The soul hath winged its flightE
Again beholds its native shoreG
A spirit robed in lightE
What now avail his mother's caresB2
Her silent tears her nightly prayersB2
-
On that young soldier's prostrate formC2
The warrior grimly smiledD2
As if he viewed in secret scornE2
That face so fair and mildD2
Why springs he to the fatal plainD
To gaze upon that form againF2
-
Why does his eye in frenzy rollG2
Why is his clenched hand raisedH2
What thought quick rushed across his soulG2
When on that boy he gazedH2
His quivering lip and swollen browI2
His mental agonies avowI2
-
Can sorrow touch that iron heartJ2
So long to mercy steeledJ2
From those fierce eyes the big drops startJ2
He sinks upon the fieldJ2
Night closes round the strife is doneY
That warrior sleeps beside his sonY
