Oh dread uncertainty	A
Life wasting agony	A
How dost thou pain the heart	B
Causing such tears to start	B
As sorrow never shed	C
O'er hopes for ever fled	C
For memory hoards up joy	D
Beyond Time's dull alloy	D
Pleasures that once have been	E
Shed light upon the scene	F
As setting suns fling back	G
A bright and glowing track	G
To show they once have cast	H
A glory o'er the past	H
But thou tormenting fiend	I
Beneath Hope's pinions screened	I
Leagued with distrust and pain	J
Makest her promise vain	J
Weaving in life's fair crown	K
Thistles instead of down	K

Present than coming woe	L
For certain sorrow brings	M
A healing in its wings	M
The softening touch of years	N
Still dries the mourner's tears	O
For human minds inherit	P
A gay elastic spirit	P
Which rises in the hour	Q
Of trial with such power	Q
That men with wonder find	R
Sorrow is less unkind	R
That human hearts can bear	S
All evils but despair	S
Or that anticipated grief	T
Which for a season mocks relief	T

To earth's fair but fleeting things	M
And mortals vainly trust	U
In fabrics formed of dust	U
We look into life's waste	V
And tread its paths in haste	V
The past for ever flown	W
The present scarce our own	W
While cold and dim before	X
Stretches the shadowy shore	X
The dark futurity which lies	Y
Beyond the glance of mortal eyes	Y
Wrapped in the mystic gloom	Z
Which canopies the tomb	Z
But faith can pour a light	A2
On the spirit's earthly night	A2
And break that sullen shroud	B2
As a star bursts through the cloud	B2
To show the upward eye	C2
The clear but distant sky	C2
The land of joy and peace	D2
Where doubts and sorrows cease	D2
