LATE OF IPSWICH AND ONE OF THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDSA
-
-
From thy sad sire and weeping kindred tornB
Thine is the crown of everlasting lifeC
On thy closed eye has burst a brighter mornB
In realms where joy and peace alone are rifeC
Thy soul in Christ enlightened and new bornB
Has meekly triumphed over nature's strifeC
And passed the dreary portals of the graveD
Strong in the faith of Him who died to saveD
-
Soldier of Christ thy warfare now is o'erE
Thy toils accomplished and thy trials doneF
And thou shalt weep and sigh young saint no moreG
With thee the scene is closed the race is runF
Death heaved the bar of that eternal doorG
The palm is gained the victory is wonF
And earthly sorrows shall no more alloyH
Thy soul's pure raptures in those realms of joyH
-
Ah who would weep for thee the early blessedI
Who that has mourned the tyranny of sinJ
The strong temptations which assail the breastI
The fiery passions warring still withinJ
But does not envy thee thy heavenly restI
And sighing wish that they at length may winJ
The narrow path thy faith and patience trodK
And meet thee in the presence of thy GodK
-
Though friends who loved thee weep above thy bierL
And kindred anguish find in grief a voiceM
We will not mourn thy exit from this sphereN
When angels in the heaven of heavens rejoiceM
When God's own hand hath wiped away each tearO
And crowned with endless life thy happy choiceM
Oh blessed lot oh change with rapture fraughtP
Surpassing human love and human thoughtP
