EZEKIEL XXXVIIA
-
-
The Spirit of God with resistless controlB
Like a sunbeam illumined the depths of my soulB
And visions prophetical burst on my sightC
As he carried me forth in the power of his mightC
Around me I saw in a desolate heapD
The relics of those who had slept their death sleepD
In the midst of the valley all reckless and bareE
Like the hope of my country lie withering thereE
-
Son of man can these dry bones long bleached in decayF
Ever feel in their flesh the warm beams of the dayF
Can the spirit of life ever enter againG
The perishing heaps that now whiten the plainH
Lord thou knowest alone who their being first gaveA
Thy power may be felt in the depths of the graveA
The hand that created again may impartI
The rich tide of feeling and life to the heartI
-
Lo these dry bones are withered and shrunk in the blastJ
O'er their ashes the tempests of ages have pastJ
And the flesh that once covered each mouldering frameK
With the dust of the earth is re mingled againG
At the voice of their God son of man they shall riseL
The light shall revisit their death darkened eyesL
Their sinews and flesh shall again be restoredM
They shall live and acknowledge the power of the LordM
-
And lo as I prophesied o'er them a soundN
Like the rushing of water was heard all aroundN
The earth trembled and shook like a leaf in the windO
As those long severed limbs to each other were joinedP
And flesh came upon them and beauty and graceQ
Returned as in life to each warrior's faceQ
A numberless host they lay stretched on the sodR
All glowing and fresh from the hand of their GodR
-
But the deep sleep of death on each eyelid still hungS
Each figure was motionless mute every tongueS
Through those slumbering thousands there breathed not a soundN
And silence unbroken reigned awfully roundN
Raise thy voice son of man call the winds from on highA
As viewless they sweep o'er the brow of the skyA
And life shall return on the wings of the blastJ
And the slumber of death shall be broken at lastJ
-
I called to the wind and a deep answer cameK
In the rush of the tempest the bursting of flameK
And the spirit of life as it breathed on the deadT
Restored to each body the soul that had fledT
Rejoicing to break from that dreamless reposeU
Like a host in the dark day of battle they roseU
He alone who had formed them could number againG
The myriads that filled all the valley and plainH
-
Son of man in this numerous army beholdV
My chosen of Israel beloved of oldV
They say that the hope of existence is o'erW
That no power from death's grasp can the spirit restoreX
He who called you my people is mighty to saveA
Your God can re open the gates of the graveA
From the chain of oblivion the soul can releaseY
And restore you again to your country in peaceY
