I know a cliff whose steep and craggy browA
O'erlooks the troubled ocean and spurns backB
The advancing billow from its rugged baseC
Yet many a goodly rood of land lies deepD
Beneath the wild wave buried which rolls onE
Its course exulting o'er the prostrate towersF
Of high cathedral church and abbey fairG
Lifting its loud and everlasting voiceH
Over the ruins which its depths enshroudI
As if it called on Time to render backB
The things that were and give to life againJ
All that in dark oblivion sleeps belowK
Perched on the summit of that lofty cliffL
A time worn edifice o'erlooks the waveM
Which greets the fisher's home returning barkN
And the young seaman checks his blithesome songO
To hail the lonely ruin from the deepD
-
Majestic in decay that roofless pileP
Survives the wreck of ages rising stillQ
A mournful beacon o'er the sea of timeR
The lonely record of departed yearsS
Yes those who view that ruin feel an aweT
Sink in the heart like those who look on deathU
For the first time and hear within the soulV
A voice of warning whisper Thus e'en thusW
All human glories perish rent from timeR
And swallowed up in that unmeasured voidX
O'er which oblivion rolls his sable tideY
Such thoughts as these that moss grown pile calls forthZ
To those who gaze upon its shattered wallsA2
Or musing tread its grass grown aisles or pauseB2
To contemplate the wide and barren heathC2
Spreading in rude magnificence aroundD2
With scarce a tree or shrub to intersectE2
Its gloomy aspect save the noble ashF2
That fronts the ruins on whose hoary trunkG2
The hurricanes of years have vainly burstH2
To mar its beauty there sublime it standsI2
Waving its graceful branches o'er the soilJ2
That wraps the mouldering children of the landK2
-
The shadowy splendour of an autumn skyL2
Was radiant with the hues of parting dayM2
The glorious sun seemed loth to leave the westN2
That glowed like molten gold a saffron seaO2
Fretted with crimson billows whose rich tintsP2
Gave to the rugged cliff and barren heathC2
A ruddy diadem of living lightQ2
-
Hark 'tis the lonely genius of the placeC
Sighs through the wind stirred branches and bewailsC
Its desolation to the moaning blastR2
That sweeps the ivy on the dark gray wallsC
No 'twas a sound of bitter agonyO2
Wrung from the depths of some o'erburdened heartS2
Which in life's early morning had receivedT2
A sad inheritance of sighs and tearsC
-
Starting I turned and seated on the groundD2
Beside the broken altar I beheldD2
A female figure whose fantastic dressC
And hair enwreathed with sprigs of ash and yewU2
Bespoke a mind in ruins On her browA
Despair had stamped his iron seal her cheekV2
Was pale as moonlight on the misty waveM
Her hollow eyes were fixed on vacancyO2
Or wildly sent their hurried glances roundD2
With quick impatient gesture as in questD2
Of some loved object present to her mindD2
But shut for ever from her longing viewU2
-
The sun went down She slowly left her seatD2
And cast one long sad look upon the waveM
Then poured the anguish of her breaking heartD2
In a low plaintive strain of melodyO2
That rose and died away upon the breezeC
The mournful requiem of her perished hopesC
-
Hark the restless spirits of ocean sighL2
I can hear them speak as the wind sweeps byL2
See the ivy has heard their mystic callW2
And shivering clings to the broken wallW2
The dark green leaves take a sadder shadeD2
And the flowers turn pale and begin to fadeD2
The landscape grows dim in the deepening gloomX2
And the dead awake in the silent tombX2
I have watched the return of my true love's barkN
From the sun's uprising till midnight darkN
I have watched and wept through the weary dayD2
But his ship on the deep is far awayD2
I have gazed for hours on the whitening trackB
Of the pathless waters and called him backB
But my voice returned on the moaning blastD2
And the vessel I sought still glided pastD2
-
We parted on just such a lovely nightD2
The billows were tossing in cloudless lightD2
And the full bright moon on the waters sleptD2
And the stars above us their vigils keptD2
And the surges whispered a lullabyL2
As low and as sweet as a lover's sighL2
And he promised as gently he pressed my handD2
He would soon return to his native landD2
-
But long months have fled and this burning brainY2
Is seared with weeping and watching in vainY2
A dark dark shade on my bosom liesC
And nights of sorrow have dimmed these eyesC
The roses have fled from my pallid cheekV2
And the grief that I feel no words can speakV2
I have made my home with the graves of the deadD2
And the cold earth pillows my aching headD2
-
He will come he will come I know it nowA
The waves are dancing before his prowA
He comes to speak peace to my aching heartD2
To tell me we never again shall partD2
I can hear his voice in the freshening breezeC
As his bark glides o'er the rippling seasC
And my heart will break forth into laughter and songO
When I lead him back through the gazing throngO
-
Ah no where yon shade on the water liesC
The slow rising moon deceives my eyesC
And the tide of sorrow within my breastD2
Rolls on like the billows that never restD2
I will look no more on the heaving deepD
But return to my lowly bed and weepD
He will come to my dreams in the darksome nightD2
And his bark will be here with the dawn of lightD2
-
When the song ceased she turned her heavy eyesC
With such a piteous glance upon my faceC
It pierced my heart and fast the gathering tearsC
Blinded my sight Alas poor maniacB
For thee no hope shall dawn no tender thoughtD2
Wake in thy blighted heart a thrill of joyZ2
The immortal mind is levelled with the dustD2
Ere the tenacious cords of life give wayD2
Hers was a common tale she early ownedD2
The ardent love that youthful spirits feelA3
And gave her soul in blind idolatryO2
To one dear object and his ship was lostD2
In sight of port lost on the very mornB3
That should have smiled upon their bridal riteD2
She saw the dreadful accident like oneC3
Who saw it not and from that fatal hourD3
All memory of it faded from her mindD2
And still she watches for the distant sailE3
Of him who never never can returnF3
-
Poor stricken maid thy best affectionsC
Thy hopes thy wishes centred all in earthG3
Earth has repaid thee with a broken heartD2
Love to thy God had known no rash excessC
For in his service there is joy and peaceC
A light which on thy troubled mind had shedD2
Its holy influence and those tearful eyesC
Had then been raised in gratitude to heavenC3
Nor chased delusive phantoms o'er the deepD
