The Old Ash Tree Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEDE FGFGHIHI JKJKELEL MNMNOGOG

Thou beautiful Ash thou art lowly laidA
And my eyes shall hail no moreB
From afar thy cool and refreshing shadeA
When the toilsome journey's o'erC
The winged and the wandering tribes of airD
A home 'mid thy foliage foundE
But thy graceful boughs all broken and bareD
The wild winds are scattering roundE
-
The storm demon sent up his loudest shoutF
When he levelled his bolt at theeG
When thy massy trunk and thy branches stoutF
Were riven by the blast old treeG
It has bowed to the dust thy stately formH
Which for many an age defiedI
The rush and the roar of the midnight stormH
When it swept through thy branches wideI
-
I have gazed on thee with a fond delightJ
In childhood's happier dayK
And watched the moonbeams of a summer nightJ
Through thy quivering branches playK
I have gathered the ivy wreaths that boundE
Thy old fantastic rootsL
And wove the wild flowers that blossomed roundE
With spring's first tender shootsL
-
And when youth with its glowing visions cameM
Thou wert still my favourite seatN
And the ardent dreams of future fameM
Were formed at thy hoary feetN
Farewell farewell the wintry windO
Has waged unsparing war on theeG
And only pictured on my mindO
Remains thy form time honoured treeG
