The Old Ash Tree Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEDE FGFGHIHI JKJKELEL MNMNOGOGThou beautiful Ash thou art lowly laid | A |
And my eyes shall hail no more | B |
From afar thy cool and refreshing shade | A |
When the toilsome journey's o'er | C |
The winged and the wandering tribes of air | D |
A home 'mid thy foliage found | E |
But thy graceful boughs all broken and bare | D |
The wild winds are scattering round | E |
- | |
The storm demon sent up his loudest shout | F |
When he levelled his bolt at thee | G |
When thy massy trunk and thy branches stout | F |
Were riven by the blast old tree | G |
It has bowed to the dust thy stately form | H |
Which for many an age defied | I |
The rush and the roar of the midnight storm | H |
When it swept through thy branches wide | I |
- | |
I have gazed on thee with a fond delight | J |
In childhood's happier day | K |
And watched the moonbeams of a summer night | J |
Through thy quivering branches play | K |
I have gathered the ivy wreaths that bound | E |
Thy old fantastic roots | L |
And wove the wild flowers that blossomed round | E |
With spring's first tender shoots | L |
- | |
And when youth with its glowing visions came | M |
Thou wert still my favourite seat | N |
And the ardent dreams of future fame | M |
Were formed at thy hoary feet | N |
Farewell farewell the wintry wind | O |
Has waged unsparing war on thee | G |
And only pictured on my mind | O |
Remains thy form time honoured tree | G |
