Young Naiad of the sparry grotA
Whose azure eyes before me burnB
In what sequestered lonely spotA
Lies hid thy flower enwreathed urnB
Beneath what mossy bank enshrinedA
Within what ivy mantled nookC
Sheltered alike from sun and windA
Lies hid thy source sweet murmuring brookC
-
Deep buried lies thy airy shellD
Beneath thy waters clearE
Far echoing up the woodland dellD
Thy wind swept harp I hearF
I catch its soft and mellow tonesG
Amid the long grass glidingH
Now broken 'gainst the rugged stonesG
In hoarse deep accents chidingH
-
The wandering breeze that stirs the groveI
In plaintive moans replyingH
To every leafy bough aboveJ
His tender tale is sighingH
Ruffled beneath his viewless wingH
Thy wavelets fret and wimpleD
Now forth rejoicingly they springH
In many a laughing dimpleD
-
To nature's timid lovely queenK
Thy sylvan haunts are knownL
She seeks thy rushy margin greenK
To weave her flowery zoneL
Light waving o'er thy fairy floodA
In all their vernal prideA
She sees her crown of opening budsM
Reflected in the tideA
-
On on for ever brightly onN
Thy lucid waves are flowingH
Thy waters sparkle as they runO
Their long long journey goingH
Bright flashing in the noon tide beamP
O'er stone and pebble breakingH
And onward to some mightier streamP
Their slender tribute takingH
-
Oh such is life a slender rillD
A stream impelled by TimeQ
To death's dark caverns flowing stillD
To seek a brighter climeQ
Though blackened by the stains of earthR
And broken be its courseS
From life's pure fount we trace its birthR
Eternity its sourceS
-
While floating down the tide of yearsT
The Christian will not mourn her lotA
There is a hand will dry her tearsU
A land where sorrows are forgotA
Though in the crowded page of timeQ
The record of her name may dieA
'Tis traced in annals more sublimeQ
The volume of EternityA
