The Evening Hour Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFGHHIIJJKK CC GGLLMMNNOOPQRQ

Like the herald hope of a fairer climeA
The brightest link in the chain of timeA
The youngest and loveliest child of dayB
I mingle and soften each glowing rayB
Weaving together a tissue brightC
Of the beams of day and the gems of nightC
I pitch my tent in the glowing westD
And receive the sun as he sinks to restD
He flings in my lap his ruby crownE
And lays at my feet his glory downE
But ere his burning eyelids closeF
His farewell glance the day king throwsG
On Nature's face till the twilight shroudsH
The monarch's brow in a veil of cloudsH
Oh then by the light of mine own fair starI
I unyoke the steeds from his beamy carI
Away they start from the fiery reinJ
With flashing hoofs and flying maneJ
Like meteors speeding on the windK
They leave a glowing track behindK
Till the dark caverns of the nightC
Receive the heaven born steeds of lightC
-
While Nature broods o'er the soft reposeG
Of the dewy mead and the half shut roseG
Does not that lovely hour give birthL
To thoughts more allied to heaven than earthL
When things that have been in perspective passM
Like the sun's last rays over memory's glassM
When life's cares are forgot when its joys are our ownN
And the mild beams of faith round the future are thrownN
When all that awakened remorse or regretO
Like a stormy morn has in splendour setO
When the sorrows of time and the hopes of heavenP
Blend in the soul like the hues of evenQ
And the spirit looks back on this troubled sceneR
With a glance as bright as it ne'er had beenQ
