Visions of the years gone byA
Flash upon my mental eyeA
Ages time no longer numbersB
Forms that share oblivion's slumbersB
Creatures of that elder worldC
Now in dust and darkness hurledC
Crushed beneath the heavy rodD
Of a long forsaken GodD
-
Hark what spirit moves the crowdE
Like the voice of waters loudE
Through the open city gateF
Urged by wonder fear or hateF
Onward rolls the mighty tideG
Spreads the tumult far and wideG
Heedless of the noontide glareH
Infancy and age are thereH
Joyous youth and matron staidI
Blooming bride and blushing maidI
Manhood with his fiery glanceB
War chief with his lifted lanceB
Beauty with her jewelled browJ
Hoary age with locks of snowK
Prince and peer and statesman graveL
White stoled priest and dark browed slaveL
Plumed helm and crowned headM
By one mighty impulse ledM
Mingle in the living massB
That onward to the desert passB
-
With song and shout and impious gleeN
What rush earth's myriads forth to seeN
Hark the sultry air is rentO
With their boisterous merrimentO
Are they to the vineyards rushingP
Where the grape's rich blood is gushingP
Or hurrying to the bridal riteO
Of warrior brave and beauty brightO
Ah no those heads in mockery crownedO
Those pennons gay with roses boundO
Hie not to a scene of gladnessN
Theirs is mirth that ends in madnessN
All recklessly they rush to hearQ
The dark words of that gifted seerQ
Who amid a guilty raceN
Favour found and saving graceN
Rescued from the doom that hurledO
To chaos back a sinful worldO
Self polluted lost debasedO
Every noble trait effacedO
To rapine lust and murder givenR
Denying God defying heavenR
Spoilers of the shrine and hearthS
Behold the impious sons of earthT
Alas all fatally opposedO
The heart of erring man is closedO
Against that warning and he deemsN
The prophet's counsel idle dreamsN
And laughs to hear the preacher raveL
Of bursting cloud and whelming waveL
-
Tremble Earth the awful doomU
That sweeps thy millions to the tombU
Hangs darkly o'er thee and the trainV
That gaily throng the open plainV
Shall never raise those laughing eyesN
To welcome summer's cloudless skiesN
Shall never see the golden beamW
Of day light up the wood and streamW
Or the rich and ripened cornX
Waving in the breath of mornX
Or their rosy children twineY
Chaplets of the clustering vineY
The bow is bent the shaft is spedO
Who shall wail above the deadO
-
What arrests their frantic courseN
Back recoils the startled horseN
And the stifling sob of fearZ
Like a knell appals the earQ
Lips are quivering cheeks are paleA2
Palsied limbs all trembling failA2
Eyes with bursting terror gazeN
On the sun's portentous blazeN
Through the wide horizon gleamingP
Like a blood red banner streamingP
While like chariots from afarB2
Armed for elemental warC2
Clouds in quick succession riseN
Darkness spreads o'er all the skiesN
And a lurid twilight gloomU
Closes o'er earth's living tombU
-
Nature's pulse has ceased to playD2
Night usurps the crown of dayD2
Every quaking heart is stillE2
Conscious of the coming illE2
Lo the fearful pause is pastO
The awful tempest bursts at lastO
Torrents sweeping down amainY
With a deluge flood the plainY
The rocks are rent the mountains reelF2
Earth's yawning caves their depths revealF2
The forests groan the heavy galeA2
Shrieks out Creation's funeral wailA2
Hark that loud tremendous roarC2
Ocean overleaps the shoreC2
Pouring all his giant wavesN
O'er the fated land of gravesN
Where his white robed spirit glidesN
Death the advancing billow ridesN
And the mighty conqueror smilesN
In triumph o'er the sinking islesN
-
Hollow murmurs fill the airH
Thunders roll and lightnings glareH
Shrieks of woe and fearful criesN
Mingled sounds of horror riseN
Dire confusion frantic griefG2
Agony that mocks reliefG2
Like a tempest heaves the crowdO
While in accents fierce and loudO
With pallid lips and curdled bloodO
Each trembling cries The flood the floodO
