The Christian Mother's Lament Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCDD DEDEFF GHGHII

THE FOLLOWING LITTLE POEM WAS SUGGESTED BY A PASSAGE IN THE MEMOIRS OF THE LATE MRS SUSAN HUNTINGTON OF BOSTON NEW ENGLANDA
-
-
Ah cold at my feet thou art sleeping my boyB
And I press on thy pale lips in vain the fond kissC
Earth opens her arms to receive thee my joyB
And all I have suffered was nothing to thisC
The day star of hope 'neath thine eyelids is sleepingD
No more to arise at the voice of my weepingD
-
Oh how art thou changed since the light breath of morningD
Dispelled the soft dew drops in showers from the treeE
Like a beautiful bud my lone dwelling adorningD
Thy smiles called up feelings of rapture in meE
I thought not the sunbeams all brightly that shoneF
On thy waking at eve would behold me aloneF
-
The joy that flashed out from those death shrouded eyesG
That laughed in thy dimples and brightened thy cheekH
Is quenched but the smile on thy pale lip that liesG
Now tells of a joy that no language can speakH
The fountain is sealed the young spirit at restI
Ah why should I mourn thee my loved one my blestI
