THE TWILIGHT HOURA
-
Slowly I dawn on the sleepless eyeB
Like a dreaming thought of eternityC
But darkness hangs on my misty vestD
Like the shade of care on the sleeper's breastD
A light that is felt but dimly seenE
Like hope that hangs life and death betweenE
And the weary watcher will sighing sayF
Lord I thank thee 'twill soon be dayF
The lingering night of pain is pastG
Morning breaks in the east at lastG
-
Mortal thou mayst see in meC
A type of feeble infancyC
A dim uncertain struggling rayF
The promise of a future dayF
-
-
THE MORNING HOURA
-
Like a maid on her bridal morn I riseH
With the smile on her lip and the tear in her eyesH
Whilst the breeze my crimson banner unfurlsH
I wreathe my locks with the purest pearlsH
Brighter diamonds never were seenE
Encircling the neck of an Indian queenE
I traverse the east on my glittering wingI
And my smiles awake every living thingI
And the twilight hour like a pilgrim grayF
Follows the night on her weeping wayF
I raise the veil from the saffron bedJ
Where the young sun pillows his golden headJ
He lifts from the ocean his burning eyeB
And his glory lights up the earth and skyB
-
Ah I am like that dewy primeK
Ere youth hath shaken hands with timeK
Ere the fresh tide of life has wasted lowL
And discovered the hidden rocks of woeL
When like the rosy beams of mornM
Joy and gladness and love were bornM
Hope divine of heavenly birthN
And pleasure that lightens the cares of earthN
-
-
THE NOONTIDE HOURA
-
I come like an Eastern monarch dightJ
In my crown of beams in my robe of lightJ
And nature droops at my ardent gazeH
And wraps the woods in a purple hazeH
From my fiery glance the strong man shrinksH
Like a babe on the bosom of earth he sinksH
Yet cries as he turns from the glowing rayF
This is a glorious summer dayF
-
Such is manhood's fiery dowerO
Passion's all consuming powerA
Glorious beautiful and brightJ
But too dazzling to the sightJ
-
-
THE EVENING HOURA
-
Like the herald hope of a fairer climeK
The brightest link in the chain of timeK
The youngest and loveliest child of dayF
I mingle and soften each glowing rayF
Weaving together a tissue brightJ
Of the beams of day and the gems of nightJ
I pitch my tent in the glowing westJ
And receive the sun as he sinks to restJ
He flings in my lap his ruby crownP
And lays at my feet his glory downP
But ere his burning eyelids closeH
His farewell glance the day king throwsH
On Nature's face till the twilight shroudsH
The monarch's brow in a veil of cloudsH
Oh then by the light of mine own fair starQ
I unyoke the steeds from his beamy carQ
Away they start from the fiery reinR
With flashing hoofs and flying maneR
Like meteors speeding on the windJ
They leave a glowing track behindJ
Till the dark caverns of the nightJ
Receive the heaven born steeds of lightJ
-
While Nature broods o'er the soft reposeH
Of the dewy mead and the half shut roseH
Does not that lovely hour give birthN
To thoughts more allied to heaven than earthN
When things that have been in perspective passH
Like the sun's last rays over memory's glassH
When life's cares are forgot when its joys are our ownS
And the mild beams of faith round the future are thrownS
When all that awakened remorse or regretJ
Like a stormy morn has in splendour setJ
When the sorrows of time and the hopes of heavenT
Blend in the soul like the hues of evenU
And the spirit looks back on this troubled sceneE
With a glance as bright as it ne'er had beenU
-
-
NIGHTJ
-
I come like Oblivion to sweep awayF
The scattered beams from the car of dayF
The gems which the evening has lavishly strownU
Light up the lamps round my ebon throneU
Slowly I float through the realms of spaceH
Casting my mantle o'er Nature's faceH
Weaving the stars in my raven hairV
As I sail through the shadowy fields of airV
All the wild fancies that thought can bringI
Lie hid in the folds of my sable wingI
Terror is mine with his phrensied crewW
Fear with her cheek of marble hueW
And sorrow that shuns the eye of dayF
Pours out to me her plaintive layF
I am the type of that awful gloomK
Which involves the cradle and wraps the tombK
Chilling the soul with its mystical swayF
Chasing the day dreams of beauty awayF
Till man views the banner by me unfurledJ
As the awful veil of the unknown worldJ
The emblem of all he fears beneathX
The solemn garb of the spoiler deathY
-
-
CHORUS OF HOURSH
-
Born with the sun the fair daughters of timeK
We silently lead to a lovelier climeK
Where the day is undimmed by the shadows of nightJ
But eternally beams from the fountain of lightJ
Where the sorrows of time and its cares are unknownU
To the beautiful forms that encircle the throneU
Of the mighty Creator the First and the LastJ
Who the wonderful frame of the universe castJ
And composed every link of the mystical chainU
Of minutes and hours which are numbered in vainU
By the children of dust in their frantic careerZ
When their moments are wasted unthinkingly hereA2
Lavished on earth which in mercy were givenU
That men might prepare for the joys of heavenU
