Paraphrase. Psalm Xliv Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGHIJIJ KLKLCMCN

O mighty God our fathers toldA
The wondrous works thou didst of yoreB
Thy glories in the days of oldA
Wrought on proud Egypt's hostile shoreB
Thy wrath swept through that guilty landC
Before thy face the heathen fledD
His people with an outstretched handC
The Lord of Hosts in triumph ledD
-
It was not counsel spear nor swordE
A heritage for Israel wonF
It was Jehovah's awful wordG
That led our conquering armies onH
The heathen host their warriors braveI
Were scattered when the Lord aroseJ
At his terrific glance a graveI
Was found by Jacob's haughty foesJ
-
God of our strength Almighty PowerK
Our sure defence our sword and shieldL
Still guide our hosts in danger's hourK
Still lead our armies to the fieldL
In thee we trust what foe can standC
The awful brightness of thine eyeM
Both life and death are in thy handC
And in thy smile is victoryN
