What hast thou seen in the olden timeA
Dark ruin lone and grayB
Full many a race from thy native climeA
And the bright earth pass awayB
The organ has pealed in these roofless aislesC
And priests have knelt to prayB
At the altar where now the daisy smilesC
O'er their silent beds of clayB
-
I've seen the strong man a wailing childD
By his mother offered hereE
I've seen him a warrior fierce and wildD
I've seen him on his bierE
His warlike harness beside him laidF
In the silent earth to rustG
His plumed helm and trusty bladeF
To moulder into dustG
-
I've seen the stern reformer scornH
The things once deemed divineI
And the bigot's zeal with gems adornH
The altar's sacred shrineI
I've seen the silken banners waveJ
Where now the ivy clingsK
And the sculptured stone adorn the graveJ
Of mitred priests and kingsK
-
I've seen the youth in his tameless gleeL
And the hoary locks of ageM
Together bend the pious kneeL
To read the sacred pageM
I've seen the maid with her sunny browN
To the silent dust go downO
The soil bound slave forget his woeP
The king resign his crownO
-
Ages have fled and I have seenQ
The young the fair the gayB
Forgot as if they ne'er had beenR
Though worshipped in their dayB
And school boys here their revels keepS
And spring from grave to graveJ
Unconscious that beneath them sleepS
The noble and the braveJ
-
Here thousands find a resting placeT
Who bent before this shrineI
Their dust is here their name and raceT
Oblivion now are thineI
The prince the peer the peasant sleepsU
Alike beneath the sodV
Time o'er their dust short record keepsU
Forgotten save by GodV
-
I've seen the face of nature changeW
And where the wild waves beatX
The eye delightedly might rangeW
O'er many a goodly seatX
But hill and dale and forest fairY
Are whelmed beneath the tideZ
They slumber here who could declareY
Who owned those manors wideZ
-
All thou hast felt these sleepers knewA2
For human hearts are stillB2
In every age to nature trueA2
And swayed by good or illB2
By passion ruled and born to woeP
Unceasing tears they shedC2
But thou must sleep like them to knowP
The secrets of the deadC2
