Oh for the spirit which inspired of oldA
The seer's prophetic song the voice that spakeB
Through Israel's warrior king The strains that burstC
In thrilling tones from Zion's heaven strung harpD
Float down the tide of ages shedding lightE
On pagan shores and nations far remoteF
Eternal as the God they celebrateG
Their fame shall last when Time's long race is runH
And you refulgent eye of this fair worldI
Its light and centre into darkness shrinksJ
Eclipsed for ever by the glance of HimK
Whose rising sheds abroad eternal dayL
Almighty uncreated Source of lifeM
To Thee I dedicate my soul and songN
In humble adoration bending lowO
Before thy footstool Thou alone canst stampP
A lasting glory on the works of manQ
Tuning the shepherd's reed or monarch's harpD
To sounds harmonious ImmortalityR
Exists alone in Thee The proudest strainS
That ever fired the poet's soul or drewT
Melodious breathings from his gifted lyreU
Unsanctioned by thy smile shall die awayL
Like the faint sound which the soft summer breezeV
Wins from the stately lily's silver bellsW
A passing murmur a half whispered sighX
Heard for a moment in the deep reposeY
Of Nature's midnight rest then hushed for everZ
Parent of genius bright EnthusiasmA2
Bold nurse of high resolve and generous thoughtB2
'Tis to thy soul awakening power we oweO
The preacher's eloquence the painter's skillC2
The poet's lay the patriot's noble zealD2
The warrior's courage and the sage's loreE2
Oh till the soul is quickened by thy breathF2
Wit wisdom eloquence and beauty failG2
To make a just impression on the heartH2
The tide of life creeps lazily alongN
Soiled with the stains of earth and man debasedI2
Sinks far below the level of the streamJ2
Alas that thy bright flame should be confinedK2
To passion's maddening vortex and the soulL2
Waste all its glorious energies on earthM2
The world allows its votaries to feelD2
A glowing ardour an intense delightE
On every subject but the one that liftsN2
The soul above its sensual vain pursuitsO2
And elevates the mind and thoughts to GodP2
Zeal in a sacred cause alone is deemedQ2
An aberration of our mental powersR2
The sons of pleasure cannot bear that lightE
Of heavenly birth which penetrates the soulsS2
Of men who deeply conscious of their guiltT2
Mourn o'er their lost degraded state and seekU2
Through faith in Christ's atonement to regainS
The glorious liberty of sons of GodP2
Who as redeemed account it their chief joyV2
To praise and celebrate the wondrous loveW2
That called them out of darkness into lightE
Severed the chain which bound them to the dustX2
Unclosed the silent portals of the graveY2
And gave Hope wings to soar again to heavenH
-
Oh thou bright spirit of whose power I singZ2
Electric deathless energy of mindK2
Harp of the soul by genius swept awakeB
Inspire my strains and aid me to portrayL
The base and joyless vanities which manQ
Madly prefers to everlasting blissA3
Come let us mount gay Fancy's rapid carB3
And trace through forest and o'er mountain rudeC3
The bounding footsteps of the youthful bardD3
Yet new to life a stranger to the woesY
His harp is doomed to mourn in plaintive tonesE3
His ardent unsophisticated mindK2
On all things beautiful delighted dwellsW
Earth is to him a paradise No cloudF3
Floats o'er the golden promise of the mornG3
Hope daily weaves fresh roses for his browH3
Shrouding the grim and ghastly phantom DeathF2
Beneath her soft and rainbow tinted wingsI3
Ere Care has tainted with her poisonous breathF2
Life's opening buds all objects wear to himK
A lovely aspect and he peoples spaceJ3
With creatures of his own The glorious formsK3
Which haunt his solitude and brightly fillC2
Imagination's airy hall atoneL3
For all the faults and follies of his kindK2
Nor marvel that he cannot comprehendM3
The speculative aims of worldly menN3
Dearer to him a leaf or bursting budO3
Culled fresh from Nature's treasury than allP3
The golden dreams that cheat the care worn crowdF3
His world is all within He mingles notQ3
In their society he cannot drudgeR3
To win the wealth they toil to realizeS3
A different spirit animates his breastT3
Their eager calculations hopes and fearsU3
Still flit before him like dim shadows thrownL3
By April's passing clouds upon the streamJ2
A moment mirrored in its azure depthsV3
Till the next sunbeam turns them into lightE
-
Rashly confiding still to be deceivedW3
Our youthful poet overleaps the boundsX3
Of probability He walks this earthM2
Like an enfranchised spirit and the stormsK3
That darken and convulse a guilty worldI
Come like faint peals of thunder on his earY3
Or hoarser murmurs of the mighty deepZ3
Which heard in some dark forest's leafy shadeA4
But add a solemn grandeur to the sceneB4
The genial tide of thought still swiftly flowsY
Rejoicing onward ere the icy breathF2
Of sorrow falls upon the sunny fountA4
And chains the music of its dancing wavesC4
What is the end of all his lovely dreamsD4
The bright fulfilment of his earthly hopesE4
Too often penury and dire diseaseV
Neglect a broken heart an early graveY2
Oh had he tuned his harp to truths divineF4
With saints and martyrs sought a heavenly crownG4
How had his theme immortalized his songN
-
Behold the man who to the poet's fireZ
Unites the painter's fascinating artA4
His touch embodies all that fancy bringsI3
To charm the mental vision and he divesH4
Into the rich and shadowy world of thoughtA4
Soars up to heaven or plunges down to hellI4
In search of forms to mortal eyes unknownL3
To animate the canvass His bold eyeX
Confronts the king of terrors Through the gatesJ4
Of that dark prison house of woe and dreadA4
Hails the infernal monarch on his throneL3
Crowned with ambition's diadem of fireZ
Unsatisfied with all that Nature givesK4
To charm the wandering heart and roving eyeX
He would portray Omnipotence Rash manQ
Reason revolting shudders at the actA4
God is a Spirit without form or partsL4
And canst thou from a human model traceJ3
The awful grandeur of Creation's KingZ2
Nature supplies thee with no perfect draughtA4
Of human beauty in its sinless stateA4
Man bears upon his brow the curse of guiltA4
The shadow of mortality that marksM4
E'en in the sunny season of his youthN4
The melancholy sentence of decayL
Is it from such the painter would depictA4
The vision of Jehovah and from eyesS3
Dimmed with the tears of passion woe and painS
Seek to portray the dread all seeing eyeX
Which at a momentary glance can readA4
The inmost secrets of all hearts and pierceO4
The dark and fathomless abyss of nightA4
Oh drop the pencil Angels cannot gazeP4
On Him who sits upon the jasper throneL3
Robed in the splendour of immortal lightA4
But cast their crowns before him whilst they veilG2
The brow in rapt devotion and adoreE2
-
Nature will furnish subjects far beyondA4
The grasp of human genius Didst thou e'erZ
On mossy bank or grassy plot reclinedA4
Watch the effect of sunlight on the boughsQ4
Of some tall graceful ash or maple treeR
Each leaf illumin'd by the noon tide beamJ2
Transparent shines Anon a heavy cloudA4
Floats for a moment o'er the car of dayL
And gloom descends upon the forest bowersR2
A ray steals forth and on the topmost twigR4
Falls like a silver star From leaf to leafS4
The glory spreads shoots down the rugged trunkT4
And gilds each spray till the whole tree stands forthU4
Arrayed in light This is beyond thy artA4
All thy enthusiasm all thy boasted skillC2
But poorly imitates a forest treeR
-
But let us leave the painter Let us turnV4
To those who never swept the sounding lyreU
Or grasped the pencil ardent minds that holdA4
A deep communion with the winds and wavesC4
The youthful worshippers at Nature's shrineF4
What says the soft voice of the plaintive breezeV
Mournfully sweeping through the forest boughsQ4
In airy play moved gently by its breathF2
To such it hath a language and it winsW4
A tender echo from the youthful heartA4
-
With throbbing bosom Nature's student treadsX4
The sylvan haunts exultingly leaps forthU4
To hail the coming of the genial springZ2
Shedding around from her green lap the budsY4
In winter's rugged casket long enshrinedA4
To form the chaplet of the infant yearZ4
Young pensive moralist 'tis sweet to muse
On beauties which escape the vulgar eyeX
To talk with Nature 'mid her woodland paths
And hear an answering voice in every breezeV
You court her beauties with a lover's zealD2
You hear her voice nor understand the soundA4
Which speaks to you to all The volume spreadA4
Before your dazzled eyes so rich with lifeM
Is a closed book a fair illumined scrollL2
Traced in strange characters unknown to youT
Would you unfold the mystery and readA4
The record the eternal hand of GodA4
Has of himself on Nature's tablets gravedA4
You must explore another wondrous book
Of deeper interest far the book of lifeM
The glorious volume of unsullied truthN4
Time's rapid and undeviating march
Tramples down empires blots out names that once
Bid fair for perpetuity of fame
Truth is alone eternal as the GodA4
Who on this everlasting basis placedA4
His own immutable and moveless throneL3
Time to these writings daily adds new force
Deepening the traces of Jehovah's loveW2
His fathomless unbounded love to manQ
Peruse this volume and then walk abroadA4
And meditate in silence on the scenes
Which lately charmed your unassisted sense
Till your soul burns within you and breaks forthU4
In holy hymns of gratitude and praiseP4
-
Faith gives a grandeur to created thingsI3
Beyond the poet's lay or painter's artA4
Or upward flight of Fancy's eagle wingZ2
Earth is the vista through which heaven is seenB4
By him who journeying through life's narrow valeG2
Seeks in the objects which around him riseS3
To hold communion with his God to traceJ3
The wisdom goodness majesty and loveW2
That clothed the lilies of the field and twinedA4
The simple diadem of buds and leaves
So rich in their diversity of shadeA4
Round Nature's brow and o'er the rugged hills
Cast the light floating veil of purple hazeP4
Which harmonizes to its own soft hueT
The broken precipice and barren heath
Here admiration may have ample scope
The spirit soaring upward drinks in lightA4
From other worlds and in the choral songN
Of happy birds among the forest bowersR2
Hears the seraphic and harmonious strains
That angels chant around the eternal throneL3
To him there is an anthem in the breezeV
A burst of triumph in the thunder's pealD2
Which slowly rolling through the troubled air
Strikes man with terror and yet praises GodA4
-
O'er Fancy's glass another shadow flitsV
Which shows a bolder aspect than the gayL
Impassioned votaries of Nature wear
Mark his majestic port his eagle eyeX
The stern erection of his haughty browH3
Partially shaded by the snowy plumesV
That lightly wave and wanton in the breezeV
Is this a pensioner of hope Is thisV
A dreamer of wild dreams All eyes are turnedA4
To gaze upon him as with measured step
The weaponed warrior slowly passes byX
Oh this is one of War's tremendous sonsV
Glory's intrepid champion his stout heartA4
Leaps as the war horse to the trumpet's soundA4
And hails the storm of battle from afarB3
He loves the press the tumult and the strifeM
Where horror holds the gory steeds of deathF2
And slaughter hews a passage for the braveY2
He too is an enthusiast his zealD2
Impels him onward with resistless forceV
Severs his heart from nature's kindred tiesV
And feeds the wild ambition which consumesV
All that is good and lovely in his path
He flashes like a meteor on the sightA4
Seen 'mid the angry thunder clouds of warE2
Seeking a living name in fields where DeathF2
Holds his imperial banquet and the bloodA4
Of thousands flows to furnish forth the feastA4
-
There was a time when softer feelings heldA4
Their mild dominion o'er that haughty breastA4
When at his mother's feet a rosy boyV2
He wove bright garlands for his artless browH3
And sought with playful dalliance to detainS
The busy hand that could not pause to bindA4
His cumbrous wreath or answer the caressV
Of him who climbed her knees to steal the kissV
But even at those tender years his braidA4
Of April blossoms was his crown the twigR4
Of golden willow with white daisies boundA4
His jewelled sceptre and the mossy bank
Where he reclined in floral state his throneL3
The lambs that sported in the yellow meadsV
His lawful subjects while his azure eyeX
Looked up to heaven with all a child's delightA4
And thought that earth was only made for himK
How often has he wept for that fair moon
That shed her trembling glory o'er his path
Wearied his slender limbs to reach the spotA4
On which the rainbow based its splendid arch
And felt his heart with disappointment beatA4
When the fair pageant faded from his viewT
-
Ah simple boy well had it been for theeR
Had thy ambitious longings been confinedA4
To objects wisely placed beyond thy grasp
But years stole on thy ardent spirit broke
Its childish trammels and with eager joyV2
Explored the warlike annals of the pastA4
And called up spirits of the mighty deadA4
To set their hostile armies in arrayL
And fight for thee their sanguine battles o'erZ
Oh while such visions burst upon thy sightA4
Whilst shouts of victory and dying groansV
Rang on thine ear time backward rolled his tideA4
Rome in her ancient splendour proudly roseV
And murdered C sar lived again in theeR
-
Young fiery soldier let us track thy stepsV
Through danger's stormy paths to win the goalL2
Of all thy lofty and ambitious hopesV
Wedded to glory thy brave heart springs forthU4
To win thy bride from valour's armed handA4
And pluck the laurel from the brow of deathF2
A novice in the camp and new to armsV
The bugle lulls thee to repose the trumpetA4
Thrills on thy sleeping ear and bids thee dreamJ2
Of deathless fields in fancy fought and wonH
At length the day of trial comes the dayL
Which puts thy boasted courage to the proof
Thy first in battle and perchance thy lastA4
The camp is broken up the air is rentA4
With strains of martial music the loud neigh
Of prancing steeds impatient for the strife
With clang of arms and oft repeated shoutsV
Of warriors who impatiently leap forthU4
With reckless hardihood to meet their doom
-
With beating heart firm step and flashing eyeX
The young recruit of glory proudly graspsV
The standard he must only yield with life
The march commences deep excitement growsV
To fiery expectation he forgetsV
Amidst the hurried interest of the sceneB4
The crown he fights for only can be wonH
Through seas of slaughter and the waste of life
Alas how few devoted hearts like hisV
Survive their first engagement with the foe
Death strikes the hero to the dust He fallsV
In honour's mantle the triumphant cryX
Of victory on his pallid lip expiresV
But what are conquests of the bow and spearZ4
And Alexander's victories comparedA4
With the stern warfare which the soul maintainsV
Against the subtle tempter of mankindA4
The base corruptions of a sinful worldA4
An evil conscience and a callous heartA4
Oh vanquish these and through the gates of deathF2
Triumphant pass and win a heavenly crownG4
-
Oh that my soul could find a voice to speakU2
That human language could express the thoughtsV
Which fill the secret chambers of the brainS
In vain the lips pour forth harmonious soundsV
In vain the eager eye is raised to heavenH
Swimming in tears and bright with ecstasyR
The senses still are debtors to the heartA4
Which trembling throbs for utterance in vainS
Does the salvation of a deathless soulL2
Kindle no hope in the possessor's breastA4
Awaken no desire to be restoredA4
To that most pure and perfect state of blissV
Man by transgression lost the noble thoughtA4
Of claiming kindred with the skies give birthM2
To no anticipations of delightA4
Joys such as angels share and saints who dwellI4
Within the circle of Jehovah's throneL3
A light is breaking on my mental eyeX
Visions of glory in succession riseV
And fill the airy palace of the soulL2
I see afar the promised land An arch
Of golden radiance canopies the gatesV
Of that celestial city Beautiful
Unbuilt by hands the New JerusalemA2
And holy to the Lord the happy home
Of pilgrims who to reach that heavenly shrineF4
Sojourned as strangers on this goodly earthM2
Counting all things but loss yea life itself
To win an entrance through those gates of pearl
And dwell within the temple of their GodA4
Alas earth's dusky shadow lies betweenB4
My ardent spirit and that blissful shoreE2
Eye hath not seen nor mortal ear hath heardA4
How then can mortal pen portray the joysV
Prepared for those who live and die in ChristA4
-
Before me flows the rapid stream of time
Dark fathomless encumbered with the wrecksV
Of twice three thousand years They too shall sink
Beneath those turbid waters swallowed up
In the vast ocean of eternityR
Leaving few fragments on the boundless wasteA4
To tell to coming years that such have been
How shall the naked spirit cross the floodA4
And land in safety on the happy shoreE2
'Tis not an earthly pilot that can steerZ4
So frail a bark through such a stormy tideA4
Cannot the eye of faith look up and seeR
The clouds of sorrow part the day star riseV
Above life's trackless ocean shedding lightA4
Upon the darkened nations From its beamsV
The mist of error flies the angry wavesV
Of passion which so long have vexed the worldA4
Are hushed to rest controlled by Him who roseV
From tranquil sleep and to the roaring wasteA4
Of midnight waters mustering all their wrath
Said Peace be still The howling winds obeyedA4
And silence sank upon the storm tossed mainS
-
Oh look to Him and to his glorious wordA4
His universal sovereignty demandsV
That deep devotion of the heart which menN3
Miscall enthusiasm Zeal alone deservesV
The name of madness in a worldly causeV
Light misdirected ever leads astrayL
But hope inspired by faith will guide to heavenH
To win the laurel wreath the soldier fightsV
To free his native land the patriot bleedsV
And to secure his crown the martyr diesV
For beauteous Rachel Isaac's son enduredA4
Seven years of bitter servitude and deemedA4
The weary months but moments to obtainS
From crafty Laban's hand his promised brideA4
To prove his friendship for the man he lovedA4
The generous Jonathan forgot his claimsV
To royalty intent to save the life
Of him whom God had called to fill his throneL3
And wilt thou feel less zealous to regainS
The love and favour of thy heavenly KingZ2
And shrink because the path to glory liesV
Up the steep hill of duty He who savedA4
Amidst the tempest on GennesaretA4
Peter when sinking in the waves will aidA4
Thy feeble steps and guide thee to the rock
Of everlasting strength
-
Spirit divineF4
Whose name I erst invoked whose influence fillsV
The narrow confines of this human breastA4
If I have dared to sing of truths sublime
Oh shed a glory round my rugged lyreU
Hallow the feeble strains that would revealD2
The dazzling light which streaming from thy wingsV
Gilds all the dark and troubled tide of thoughtA4
Lifted by thee above the gulf of time
My eye explores the regions of the blessedA4
And hopes long chained to earth are raised to heavenH
Never while reason holds her steady reinS
To curb imagination's fiery steedsV
May I to joyless apathy resignF4
The high and holy thoughts inspired by theeR
