An Appeal To The Free Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EEFFGGEE HHIIJJKK LLMNOOEEEE PPQQRSEE

Offspring of heaven fair Freedom impartA
The light of thy spirit to quicken each heartA
Though the chains of oppression our free limbs ne'er boundB
Bid us feel for the wretch round whose soul they are woundB
Whose breast is corroded with anguish so deepC
That the eye of the slave is too blood shot to weepC
No balm from the fountain of nature will flowD
When the mind is degraded by fetter and blowD
-
The friends of humanity nobly have strivenE
But the bonds of the heart broken slave are unrivenE
Whilst Religion extends o'er those champions her shieldF
May they never to party or prejudice yieldF
The glorious cause by all freemen espousedG
A light shines abroad and the lion is rousedG
The crush of the iron has struck fire from the stoneE
Bid them back to the charge and the field is their ownE
-
Ye children of Britain brave sons of the IslesH
Who revel in freedom and bask in her smilesH
Can ye sanction such deeds as are done in the WestI
And sink on your pillows untroubled to restI
Are your slumbers unbroken by visions of dreadJ
Does no spectre of misery glare on your bedJ
No cry of despair break the silence of nightK
And thrill the cold hearts that ne'er throbbed for the rightK
-
Are ye fathers nor pity those children bereavedL
Of the birth right which man from his Maker receivedL
Are ye husbands and blest with affectionate wivesM
The comfort the solace the joy of your livesN
And feel not for him whom a tyrant can severO
From the wife of his bosom and children for everO
Are ye Christians enlightened with precepts divineE
And suffer a brother in bondage to pineE
Are ye men whom fair freedom has marked for her ownE
Yet listen unmoved to the negro's deep groanE
-
Ah no ye are slaves for the freeborn in mindP
Are the children of mercy the friends of mankindP
By no base selfish motive their actions are weighedQ
They barter no souls in an infamous tradeQ
They eat not the bread which is moistened by tearsR
And carelessly talk of the bondage of yearsS
They feel as men should feel the clank of the chainE
Bids them call upon Justice to cleave it in twainE
