Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDF GEGH IJIJ KLKL MNMN OEOE PQPQ RSRS TUTUCould my heart hold another one | A |
I cannot tell | B |
Sometimes it seems an ample dome | C |
Sometimes a cell | B |

Sometimes a temple filled with saints | D |
Serene and fair | E |
Whose eyes are pure from mortal taints | D |
All lilies are | F |

Sometimes a narrow shrine in which | G |
One precious fare | E |
Smiles ever from its guarded niche | G |
With deathless grace | H |

Sometimes a nest where weary things | I |
And weal and shy | J |
Are brooded under mother wings | I |
Till they can fly | J |

And then a palace with wide rooms | K |
Adorned and dressed | L |
Where eager slaves pour sweet perfumes | K |
For each new guest | L |

Whiche'er it be I know always | M |
Within that door | N |
Whose latch it is not mine to raise | M |
Blows evermore | N |

With breath of balm upon its wing | O |
A soft still air | E |
Which makes each closely folded thing | O |
Look always fair | E |

My darlings do you feel me near | P |
As every day | Q |
Into this hidden place and dear | P |
I take my way | Q |

Always you stand in radiant guise | R |
Always I see | S |
A noiseless welcome in the eyes | R |
You turn on me | S |

And whether I come soon or late | T |
Whate'er befall | U |
Always within the guarded gate | T |
I find you all | U |
