Rhyme Scheme: ABBAB CDECD FGGFG HIIHI JKKJK LMMLM BNNBN OEPOP QLLQR SKKSK

My darling once lived by my sideA
She scarcely ever went awayB
We shared our studies and our playB
Nor did she care to walk or rideA
Unless I did the same that dayB
-
Now she is gone to some far placeC
I never see her any moreD
The pleasant play times all are o'erE
I come from school there is no faceC
To greet me at the open doorD
-
At first I cried all day all nightF
I could not bear to eat or smileG
I missed her missed her all the whileG
The brightest day did not look brightF
The shortest walk was like a mileG
-
Then some one came and told me thisH
Your playmate is but gone from viewI
Close by your side she stands and youI
Can almost hear her breathe and kissH
Her soft cheek as you used to doI
-
Only a little veil betweenJ
A slight thin veil if you could seeK
Past its gray folds there she would beK
Smiling and sweet and she would leanJ
And stretch her hands out joyfullyK
-
All the day long and year by yearL
She will go forward as you goM
As you grow older she will growM
As you grow good she with her clearL
And angel eyes will mark and knowM
-
Think when you wake up every dayB
That she is standing by your bedN
Close to the pillow where her headN
Her little curly head once layB
With a 'Good morning' smiled not saidN
-
Think when the hooks seem dull and tameO
The sports no longer what they wereE
That there she sits a shape of airP
And turns the leaf or joins the gameO
With the same smile she used to wearP
-
So moving on still hand in handQ
One of these days your eyes will clearL
The hiding veil will disappearL
And you will know and understandQ
Just why your playmate left you hereR
-
This made me happier and I tryS
To think each day that it may beK
Sometimes I do so easilyK
But then again I have to cryS
Because I want so much to SEEK
