Entre deux amants il y a toujours l'an qui baise et l'autre qui tend la joueA
-
-
I says he loves me well and IB
Believe it in my hands to makeC
Or mar his life lies utterlyD
Nor can I the strong plea denyB
Which claims my love for his love's sakeC
-
He says there is no face so fairE
As mine when I draw near his eyesF
Light up each ripple of my hairE
He loves the very clunk I wearE
He touches fondly where it liesF
-
And roses roses all the wayG
Upon my path fall strewed by himH
His tenderness by night by dayG
Keeps faithful watch to heap alwayG
My cup of pleasure to the brimH
-
The other women full of spiteI
Count me the happiest woman bornJ
To be so worshipped I delightI
To flaunt his homage in their sightI
For me the rose for them its thornJ
-
I love him or I think I doK
Sure one MUST love what is so sweetL
He is all tender and all trueK
All eloquent to plead and sueK
All strength though kneeling at my feetL
-
Yet I had visions once of yoreM
Girlish imaginings of a zestN
A possible thrill but why run o'erO
These fancies idle dreams no moreM
I will forget them this is bestN
-
So let him take the past is pastP
The future with its golden keyD
Into his outstretched hands I castP
I shall love him perhaps at lastP
As now I love his love for meD

IIB
-
Nor as all other women mayG
Love I my Love he is so greatQ
So beautiful I dare essayG
No nearness but in silence layG
My heart upon his path and waitQ
-
Poor heart its healings are so lowR
He does not heed them passing byB
Save as one heeds where violets growR
A fragrance caring not to knowR
Where the veiled purple buds may lieB
-
I sometimes think that it is deadS
It lies so still I bend and leanT
Like mother over cradle headS
Wondering if still faint breaths are shedS
Like sighs the parted lips betweenT
-
And then with vivid pulse and thrillU
It quickens into sudden blissV
At sound of step or voice nor willU
Be hushed although regardless stillU
He knows not cares not it is hisW
-
I would not lift it if I couldX
The little flame though faint and dimH
As glow worm spark in lonely woodX
Shining where no man calls it goodX
May one day light the path for himH
-
May guide his way or soon or lateQ
Through blinding mist or wintry rainY
And so content I watch and waitQ
Let others share his happier fateQ
I only ask to share his painY
-
And if some day when passing byB
My dear Love should his steps arrestN
Should mark the poor heart waiting nighB
Should know it his should lift it whyB
Patience is good but joy is bestN
