The angel opened the doorA
A little wayB
And she vanished as melts a starC
Into the dayB
And for just a second's spaceD
Ere the bar he drewE
The pitying angel pausedF
And we looked throughE
-
What did we see withinG
Ah who can tellH
What glory and glow of lightI
IneffableJ
What peace in the very airK
What hush and calmL
Soothing each tired soulM
Like healing balmL
-
Was it a dream we dreamedN
Or did we hearO
The harping of silver harpsP
Divinely clearQ
A murmur of that new songR
Which soft and lowS
The happy angels singT
Sing as they goS
-
And as in the legend oldU
The good monk heardV
As he paced his cloister dimW
A heavenly birdV
And rapt and lost in the joyX
Of the wondrous songR
Listened a hundred yearsY
Nor deemed them longR
-
So chained in sense and limbW
All blind with sunZ
We stood and tasted the joyX
Of our vanished oneZ
And we took no note of timeA2
Till soon or lateB2
The gentle angel sighedC2
And shut the gateB2
-
The vision is closed and sealedD2
We are come backE2
To the old accustomed earthF2
The well worn trackE2
Back to the daily toilG2
The daily painH2
But we never can be the sameI2
Never againJ2
-
We who have bathed in noonK2
All radiant whiteI
Shall we come back contentL2
To sit in nightI
Content with self and sinG
The stain the blotM2
To have stood so near the gateB2
And enter notM2
-
O glimpse so swift so sweetN2
So soon withdrawnO2
Stay with us light our dusksY
Till day shall dawnO2
Until the shadows fleeP2
And to our viewE
Again the gate unbarsY
And we pass throughE
