Secrets Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF AHAH IJIK LMNM OPOP ABAB QRQR STUT

In the long bright summer dear to bird and beeA
When the woods are standing in liveries green and gayB
Merry little voices sound from every treeA
And they whisper secrets all the dayB
-
If we knew the language we should hear strange thingsC
Mrs Chirry Mrs Flurry deep in private chatD
How are all your nestlings dear Do they use their wingsC
What was that sad tale about a catD
-
Where is your new cottage Hush I pray you hushE
Please speak very softly dear and make no noiseF
It is on the lowest bough of the lilac bushG
And I am so dreadfully afraid of boysF
-
Mr Chirry chose the spot without consulting meA
Such a very public place and insecure for itH
I can scarcely sleep at night for nervousness but heA
Says I am a silly thing and doesn't mind a bitH
-
So the Bluebirds have contracted have they for a houseI
And a nest is under way for little Mr WrenJ
Hush dear hush Be quiet dear quiet as a mouseI
These are weighty secrets and we must whisper themK
-
Close the downy dowagers nestle on the boughL
While the timorous voices soften low with dreadM
And we walking underneath little reckon theirN
Mysteries are couching in the tree tops overheadM
-
Ah the pretty whisperers It was very wellO
When the leaves were thick and green awhile agoP
Leaves are secret keepers but since the last leaf fellO
There is nothing hidden from the eyes belowP
-
Bared are the brown tenements and all the world may seeA
What Mrs Chirry Mrs Flurry hid so close that dayB
In the place of rustling wings cold winds rustling beA
And thickly lie the icicles where once the warm brood layB
-
Shall we tease the birdies when they come back in springQ
Tease and tell them we have fathomed all their secrets smallR
Every secret hiding place and dear and precious thingQ
Which they left behind the leaves the red leaves in the fallR
-
They would only laugh at us and wink their saucy eyesS
And answer Last year's secrets are all past and toldT
New years bring new happenings and fresh mysteriesU
You are very welcome to the stale ones of the oldT
