I know where it lurks and hidesA
In the midst of the busy houseB
In the midst of the children's gleeC
All clay its shadow bidesB
Nobody knows but meC
-
On a closet shelf it dwellsB
In the darkest corner of allD
Mid rolls of woollen and furE
And faint forgotten smellsB
Of last year's lavenderE
-
That a ghost has its dwelling thereF
Nobody else would guessB
Only a baby's shoeG
A curl of golden hairF
You would say a toy or twoG
-
A broken doll whose lipsB
And cheeks of waxen bloomH
Show dents of fingers smallD
Little fair finger tipsB
A worn sash that is allD
-
Little to see or to guessB
But whenever I open the doorI
There faithful to its postJ
With its eyes' sad tendernessB
I see my little ghostJ
-
And I hasten to shut the doorI
I shut it tight and fastK
Lest the sweet sad thing get freeC
Lest it flit beside on the floorI
And sadden the day for meC
-
Lest between me and the sunL
And between me and the heavensB
And the laugh in the children's eyesB
The shadowy feet should runL
The faint gold curls ariseB
-
Like a gleam of moonlight paleM
And all the warmth and the lightN
Should die from the summer dayO
And the laughter turn to wailM
And I should forget to prayO
-
So I keep the door shut fastK
And my little ghost shut inP
And whenever I cross the hallD
I shiver and hurry pastK
But I love it best of allD
