Mary Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCD EFEFGG HIHIJJ KLKLMM NONOPP QRQROO

The drowsy summer in the flowering limesA
Had laid her down at easeB
Lulled by soft sportive winds whose tinkling chimesA
Summoned the wandering beesB
To feast and dance and hold high carnivalC
Within that vast and fragrant banquet hallD
-
She stood my Mary on the wall belowE
Poised on light arching feetF
And drew the long green branches down to showE
Where hung mid odors sweetF
A tiny miracle to touch and viewG
The humming bird's small nest and pearls of blueG
-
Fair as the summer's self she stood and smiledH
With eyes like summer skyI
Wistful and glad half matron and half childH
Gentle and proud and shyI
Her sweet head framed against the blossoming boughJ
She stood a moment and she stands there nowJ
-
'Tis sixteen years since trustful unafraidK
In her full noon of lightL
She passed beneath the grass's curtaining shadeK
Out of our mortal sightL
And springs and summers bearing gifts to menM
And long long winters have gone by since thenM
-
And each some little gift has brought to dressN
That unforgotten bedO
Violet anemone or lady's tressN
Or spray of berries redO
Or purpling leaf or mantle pure and coldP
Of winnowed snow wrapped round it fold on foldP
-
Yet still she stands a glad and radiant shapeQ
Set in the morning fairR
That vanished morn which had such swift escapeQ
I turn and see her thereR
The arch sweet smile the bending graceful headO
And seeing thus why do I call her deadO
