The boat cast loose her mooringsA
Good by was all we saidB
Good by Old World we said with a smileC
And never looked back as we spedB
A shining wake of foam behindD
To the heart of the sunset redB
-
Heavily drove our plunging keelE
The warring waves betweenF
Heavily strove we night and dayG
Against the west wind keenF
Bent like a foe to bar our pathH
A foe with an awful mienF
-
Never a token met our eyesI
From the dear land far awayG
No storm swept bird no drifting branchJ
To tell us where it layG
Wearily searched we hour by hourK
Through the mist and the driving sprayG
-
Till all in a flashing momentL
The fog veils rent and flewM
And a blithesome south wind caught the sailsN
And whistled the cordage throughM
And the stars swung low their silver lampsO
In a dome of airy blueM
-
And breathed from unseen distancesP
A new and joyous airQ
Caressed our senses suddenlyR
With a rapture fresh and rareQ
It is the breath of home we criedS
We feel that we are thereQ
-
O Land whose tent roof is the domeT
Of Heaven's purest skyU
Whose mighty heart inspires the windD
Of glad strong libertyR
Standing upon thy sunset shoreV
Beside the waters highU
-
Long may thy rosy smile be brightW
Above the ocean dinX
Thy young undaunted voice be heardY
Calling the whole world kinX
And ever be thy arms held outZ
To take the storm tossed inX
